The Editor Writes…..

Hello All

I usually like winter.  These crisp clean days are great for riding.  But too much time spent in those Southern Cold Places means I have come down with a cold.  Despite that, we still went for a ride this afternoon, lured by a great price on a leather jacket by Torrini.  Just $245 for a fully armoured touring jacket.  It will go well with my black Draggin jeans.

Such commercialism!  Welcome to our new advertisers, Draggin Jeans.  There are more to come as our little club grows.

Thanks everyone for your contributions this month.  We are the full 14 pages again.

Contributions for this magazine can be emailed to info@auswingriders.com or posted to 47 Breslin St, Carina, Qld 4152.  Photos and slides can be scanned and returned.

The Secretary’s Desk

Hi Everyone

I hate winter, these cold mornings are not enjoyable.  But the days are glorious and we had a great trip to Goondiwindi – see our story inside.  We have also just enjoyed a great night out at the Australian Woolshed, that story will be in next months magazine.  Please follow up on our editors request and keep those articles/stories coming in for our magazine.  It is a vital source of information/gossip, especially for our members who do not make it to our monthly meetings.  Our meetings are very productive and very social.  We have excellent attendance, and some of our amusing conversations that do not make our minutes report could make interesting reading – so come-on everyone, get those fingers/tongues talking!

That is it from me this month, I am going to tell some tales now about our social night while it is still fresh, ready for Clint nice and early as well.

Ride safely, and keep warm,  Valerie

The President Speaks……

Clint reminded us again of the need for contributions to the magazine.  I know it's your magazine and you enjoy reading what others have been up to, but the others, like the 3 add, also like to read what you have been up to.  I try to contribute, admittedly often late, but when the magazine arrives, I really look forward to what others contribute.  Sure, I know Clint wants it in time to publish but if you are late with a story, don't worry, it won't be late for the next issue.  Contribute anyway.

Been a bit cool the last couple of weeks as I ride off to work in the early hours.  I imagine some of you hit the road earlier than me and in some colder areas.  It makes me think of Turbo riding through Ipswich, of John going for a ride in Melbourne.  At least up here once the sun gets going it warms up.  No wonder the Victorian Goldwing ride is planned for September once spring has sprung.  With that in mind, it was great to see so many on the Helidon ride last month.  Sure, the night was cool once the sun went down, but it was a great night for a ride.  Will so many be as keen for the Woolshed night or will the need for some "Dutch courage" before hitting the dance floor over rule the challenge of riding home in 0 - 5o temperatures.

Keep the shiny side up

Bevan

Cramms Farm

Meeting at Stapylton, were about 14 bikes, mostly Goldwings but there were a couple of extras.  Some very nice people on a Harley and a BMW (Sorry, I never did get your names) and Peter Goodsir on a borrowed CB250.  Now THAT looked funny!

Down the highway to Coomera and in towards the Hinterland.  We cruised Clagiraba Road and the Hinze Raceway Parkway.  A stop at Two Pines Café for morning tea then on again, over the border into NSW.  Bill struck a little trouble with a tyre in Chillingham and while waiting for a tow truck, he and Mary got to be experts on the town and are apparently considering starting up a Chillingham Tourist Information Bureau.

The rest of us continued on to Cramms Farm, which is on the far end of the Hinze Dam and looks back towards Mt Warning.  Pretty country.

The Westerly winds were blowing strong but the BBQs were set going and we all had lunch.

Being on a tight schedule, Charleen and I accompanied everyone back out to the highway where we set sail for home.

The rest had fuel stops and coffee stops and by all accounts a great afternoon to finish off a great Ride.

Thanks Geoff.

THE COFFS HARBOUR LOOOONG WEEKEND

After trying numerous times to get some info on a late registration for Goondiwindi, and with no one from Brisbane Ulysses willing to return my calls, I eventually managed to get hold of a committee member who informed me that we could just front up and possibly get a camping spot, but that it was not guaranteed.  However, we would not be able to attend the dinner, rides or get any badges or patches as the Odyssey was already over booked.

Having decided not to go to Goondiwindi on the off chance of getting in, we decided to take up an invitation from Turbo and Wendy to go to Coffs Harbour and meet with the Australian Goldwing Assoc.

So on the Saturday with the trailer packed we set off to meet with Turbo, Wendy and Winston at the BP Browns plains.  Turbo led the way as we headed out through Beaudesert and along Lyons Rd toward Casino.  The weather was absolutely perfect for a good days ride, we pulled into Casino around mid morning  refuelled and stopped for a bite of breakfast at Macca’s.

Back on the road with everyone in great spirits, looking forward to getting into Coffs Harbour by early afternoon, setting up camp and then sitting back to relax and enjoy the weekend.  It was never going to happen as we planned.

Comfortably cruising around 110, and around 25km out from Grafton our wing started to feel a little strange, and all but steady on the road.  On the CB to let Winston (Houston) know we have a problem. Slowing the bike and getting ready to pull off the road, not wanting to use the brakes and not sure exactly what was wrong, our wing started  to fishtail up the road. By the time I was at a slow enough speed to pull off the road I was having one hell of a time holding the bike upright.

Winston had ridden ahead to pull up Turbo and Wendy.

Eventually managing to get onto the road verge, we got off a little shaken and still not sure what had happened, when we checked the rear tyre we found a small slash in the side wall, enough to make it impossible to repair the tyre.

Winston, Turbo and Wendy soon joined us, and whilst I contacted NRMA (thank goodness for Ultra cover), Turbo was on the phone organising a mate of his in Coffs to bring a replacement tyre to Grafton.

An hour or so later a poorly equipped NRMA tilt truck arrived to pick up our bike, trailer and us.  What a fun trip we had into Grafton.  Our NRMA operator had only one tie down strap in his truck, not near enough to hold my bike securely on the back of his truck.  After it had fallen over twice, and caused some damage I decided to ride the last 5 Km into town on the back of the truck trying to hold it upright.  No such luck on the last corner into town a touch on the brakes and my bike went over for the third time, with me under it.  By now I’m sure that anyone within ear shot may have learnt a few choice words.

While all this was going on Winston had ridden into Grafton ahead of us and managed to arrange for the local Suzuki dealership to keep their workshop open so that when the new tyre arrived we could change it and continue on our way.

Around 4 hrs later we had changed the tyre and were back on the road. As it was already late afternoon, and with the hassles we had had the high spirits had waned somewhat.

We got into Coffs just on dusk and had to set up camp in the dark.

The rest of the night was great, the Goldwing Assoc members made us feel at home, we enjoyed a BBQ, a few drinks and some very friendly and pleasant company.  Next day started with a BBQ breakfast after which we all set off for some riding up into the hills, eventually making our way to Dorrigo to take in a vintage and veteran bike show.

Lunch at the local, a quick look around Dorrigo then back to Coffs Harbour.  Turbo gave us a guided tour around the town before we headed back to the Camping ground, for dinner with the rest of the group, more good food, drinks and chats, whilst the hours passed away.

Next morning many of the Goldwing members were leaving early as they had many hours of riding ahead of them.

We packed up leisurely and eventually hit the road around 10 am, and again settled in for a pleasant relaxing ride home.  Not to be.

About 40 Km out of Casino we blew the rear tyre again, this time it seemed to have developed a blister in the side wall, creating a vibration through the bike, and soon afterward it blew with one hell of a loud bang. This time when the bike started to sway and fishtail we were better prepared.

Winston to the rescue again, managing to stop Turbo and Wendy a few K’s down the road and turn them around yet again.  Winston rode off toward Casino to find a spot where he had some phone reception to contact the NRMA yet again, we four opened the trailers, set up our chairs and stoves on the side of the road and had afternoon tea.

This time Winston wasn’t going to let the next driver make the same mistake, informing him of exactly what type of bike he was picking up and to make sure he had plenty of tie down straps.  We eventually got into Casino around 5 pm, and after a few phone calls to the RACQ they managed to organise Gary’s Motorbike Towing Service to come and pick us up and bring us back to Brisbane.

Tea at Macca’s and by this time Wendy was not feeling well, so with her safely tucked up in a cosy motel Turbo and Winston waited with us in the cold until Gary eventually arrived around 9pm.  We loaded the bike, hooked up the trailer and set off for home.  A most interesting drive home!!!!

Winston followed us until the Gold Coast where he decided to spend the night.

Whilst some of the weekend was an experience I hope not to go through again, it was made all the better for having travelled as a group and having the friendship and support when we most needed it.

More annoying is the fact that the second tyre blew because the supplier sold us a tyre that was not for our bike and did not have the weight rating required for a Goldwing.  Other than replacing it they were not prepared to admit to any responsibility for a mistake that could have had a catastrophic ending, not to mention the inconvenience and expense involved.

There were many highlights during the weekend and a great laugh had by all;

With Wendy and Deb pretending to brush down Winston’s butt, after he helped change the tyre, THEY said he had grease and dirt on his butt, NOT.

Eric not putting down his side stand fully, when parking amongst a dozen other wings, and causing their owners to run to his assistance to ensure their bikes were safe.

Winston wearing his Where’s Wally striped long johns, strutting around the camp ground showing off his wares to the world (which should be illegal).

Winston stirring up the locals with his remote start and alarm in the car park at Macca’s.

But even with the mishaps we had a great weekend.  Thanks to Wendy, Turbo and Winston for all the help and for a great weekend.

Eric and Deb

Odyssey At Goondiwindi 12/13/14 June 2004.

We cannot let a long weekend, especially the last one for the year, escape without going away – somewhere!  Luckily for us there is an Odyssey to go to, and we have even rustled up a couple more to join us – Jayne & Bear, Annette & Larry, Tina & Mal and Mary & Lionel.  Lookout Goondiwindi!

Try as much as we could we couldn’t get away on the Friday to join Jayne & Bear and Annette & Larry, but they did promise to spread themselves enough to reserve a camping spot for Thommo & I.  A great gesture, considering they have an extra night for partying.  At last Saturday morning arrives, and we have arranged to meet T & M and M & L. at the western freeway roundabout at 7-30 am and we are all on the way by 8.00 am following a very brief hello.

Glorious sunny blue Queensland skies have greeted us this morning after a rather dull Friday, and we are travelling West.  Now as a friend of mine has always quoted – “anywhere south of Tweed Heads means COLD!”  I should have mentioned this little gem to Tina & Mary earlier at the meeting spot, as I never trust crossing Cunninghams Gap anytime, so I had full riding regalia which includes, fully lined pants, thermal smalls, lining in the Dri-Rider, scarf and winter riding gloves – get the picture?  Our first stop is going to be the BP at Warwick, and we have a great run including very brisk temperatures through the Gap and into Warwick.  Thommo and I had been trying to hail the Jacobsen’s earlier to no avail, so we could not get updates on the actual temperature.  Now here comes the censored version of our stop, as we all pull in for the obligatory petrol and coffee.  You will have to ask Tina for the exact verbal dialogue for this section as censors do not allow me to put into print what I heard as Tina fell/peeled herself off the wing.  S… S…. its ……….. freezing!!  I think Tina’s teeth were also chattering and the top box was being frantically pulled apart as Tina was looking for Jumpers, thermals, gloves – anything to put on.  I must also include Mary in this scenario, but Mary was much more ladylike and disappeared quickly to the little girls room – closely followed by Tina whose teeth were still chattering S… S… S…!

I must admit the smell of coffee, and the warm cafeteria was very welcome.  With toasted sandwiches ordered, we gave the cafe some lively entertainment as Tina gave us her true feelings of riding through the Gap in her jacket without a lining, no jumper and her famous fingerless gloves – B…….. Freezing!  Anyway, we all thawed out and eager to hit the road again.  Next stop Goondiwindi.

With the trusty Jacobsen’s in the lead and Mal & Tina bringing up the rear, there was no chit-chat just very pleasant riding through our beautiful country – what a wonderful life.  We did a brief stop as we saw a Drive & Revive sign just as we were going through Inglewood, perfect timing for the little girls room as well.  We also met up with a couple of other riders here, for the first time, also heading for the Odyssey.

We continued on in the same formation, and pulled into the Goondiwindi Showgrounds check-in at the big tent at approximately 1 p.m.  We are officially tagged, and as L & M and M & T depart to find their motel, we take-off eager to set up our camper.  We cruised around the grounds checking-out a lot of campers, but no familiar faces do we see.  Thank goodness for the mobile, we rang Bear & Jayne to be given the direction of their campsite, and to look for a camper chair with a sign pinned on it saying “Ray & Val”.  Now we head off to the other side of the grounds, and cruise along the fence of the main arena, and we find our wings patch.  Now all serious campers know how important it is when you pitch the tent, which way the door opening should be.  Well, it is very important to this person, as I am a social camper and I like to be in the middle of the activity – not facing a complete strangers tent because the tow ball on our trailer gets in the way!  Well, that is about the best way I can explain our set-up domestic, as I made Ray push and pull the trailer around about three times, and on the third attempt Ray was just about to do a real Thommo tantrum when Bear & Jayne ride up all smiles and welcome for us!  So, we look up all smiles and welcome too, and we did an academy performance of domestic bliss explaining that we were just getting our trailer lined up to my liking.  It worked and we were genuinely relieved that they had arrived when they did.  Then we noticed Jayne with a huge bundle in her arms, a Doona.  Jayne explained that it had been so cold that night, they just had to dash out and get themselves this doona, they couldn’t face another night like the last.  Bear kept repeating “it was freezing – I mean – really freezing.”  So I guess it must have been really cold for these folks who live in Rosewood.

Well, the camper is up, the boys are chatting.  Larry & Annette have arrived back from their local ride, and the girls show me where to pick-up our ‘showbag’ of vouchers, badge, local information brochures and the Odyssey shirt we had ordered.  There are a lot of wings around, and plenty of colours.  A bright blue wing with a matching trailer is attracting a lot of attention, and the owner is showing-off his new gadget – a radio remote controller gizmo.  The boys were still there when we girls were making our way back from the information tent.  The sun was going down, and I think it was time for us to open the drinks – party time.

The boys next-door have settled in well, and they have acquired a 10 gallon drum as a brazier, and added to our evening by exchanging some very amusing stories.  Back to our camp we settle down to friendly chatter, Annette does her magic and rustles up a tasty platter of nibblies and Bear brings our attention to the wonderful pink sunset – which we all admire enthusiastically!  It does look spectacular, and now we must make our way to the main marquee for our dinner.  We hailed L & M & M & T but there wasn’t enough seats on their table, so we hoped to catch-up with them later.   We had a roast with heaps of vegetables and gravy, it was delicious but it was a long, slow queue.  Then the music started, and it was loud – too loud to talk over, so we made the decision to make it back to camp for drinks.  What a good idea it was too, great company and it had been a long day, and I do believe Thommo and I were the first to say goodnight.  Please note that my tracksuit, ski socks do not encourage romance – it is sleep only tonight!

Well, we were the first to bed and then we are the last to rise – as Larry was the alarm clock letting us know that breakfast would be over soon – 7 am.  Goodness, now I have to make a dash to the toilet block – not a very pleasant sight.  This is the aspect of camping I do not enjoy, but like now we can laugh about it all later – I hope!  L & A and B & J are very patient and we all make it up for an absolutely scrumptious breakfast of Sausages, Eggs, Beans, Tomatoes, Toast, Tea & Coffee – as much as you liked.  This was all catered for by volunteer groups from country towns outside Goondiwindi, raising funds for their schools.  I cannot remember the names of the townships, but these people were real gems working so hard to give us such a good spread.  They were whole families involved, the teenagers were buttering the toast, looking for milk for our teas and coffees.  I never eat such big breakfasts at home, what is it about camping that makes me feel hungry in the morning?  Perhaps it is because I don’t have to cook it!  Anyway, it is the big parade today so Ray wants to get back to camp and wash big red.  Bear claims he washed his green mean machine while were still asleep!  Anyway, it is time to spruce up and get ready for the big assembly at 11 am.  We have our AWRA flags, so we rig ours up behind the top box, it didn’t work though as it was too low to attract any breeze.  We will have to workout something better.

The cruise through town is great, we believe there are approximately 600 bikes, and it is fantastic.  Plenty of people lined the main streets, and we waved and smiled all the way to the border bridge where the Goondiwindi Grey monument stands.  The Goondiwindi markets were set-up in the park, there was a local Pipe Band playing and a Bush Poet reading together with damper being served.  The locals had really put in a huge effort to show-off their town, and keep us entertained.  We dawdled around, chatting to the locals, a lot of kids were taking the opportunity to sit on the wings in particular – the wings definitely attract a lot of attention, especially the red ones!

Trying to keep in touch was a bit tricky at this point as a local paper photographer had nabbed three of our lads, Thommo, Larry and Lionel for a photo shoot – so they were busy posing and we were trying to locate Bear & Jayne so we could go and find a place for lunch.  Luckily I knew where the pub was we were heading for – the National.  So, follow us, Ray was not so sure as he REALLY knows how good/bad I am at directions.  But, full of confidence we head off, and do a very scenic route around the block and I am being very clear where the hotel is, on the next corner.  It is, that is it – the Victoria!  Luckily for me everyone is smart enough to follow us around, and pull up at the Victoria not the National.   Our little group decide we are going to snuggle into a booth, but we have to re-arrange the furniture as usual as we take-up another table as well.  What fun, anyway we enjoy the fact that we have given the local barmaid quite a challenge in the drinks, and then the chef with our order for lunch.  This quiet little hotel has had the peace shattered today.  We take a leisurely lunch before heading back to camp for another session of drinks, and again Annette magically appeared with a platter, while Jayne found lollies and more lollies.

Time sure flies when you are having fun doesn’t it?  Oh! I almost forgot, during this time I had circulated our samples of the badges that Boyles Badges had sent, and I had even taken them up with me last night to the main marquee for the others to see them.  Then I had ducked back to camp as I was paranoid that I would lose them.  This did not help the fact that our newest member Ken was trying to see them, and every time I met up with Ken I didn’t have the badges with me – sorry Ken.

Again we get to marvel at Bears pink sunset as the day comes to a close, and we have to hustle ourselves to head over to the marquee for Sunday evening meal and entertainment.  The meal again is excellent, Lasagne & Salad or Lamb Casserole & Rice.  The crowd was down on last night, and Ray was definitely staying for dessert this time, and we had nestled ourselves altogether this time.  Less Mal & Tina though, as work commitment had forced them home in the morning.  I think we were really in the mood to party, the entertainer arrived and introduced himself – Tony, and he said he would just start quietly so as not to disturb our meal.  He started with a good old John Denver number and we were hooked, Neil Diamond favourites, this was our material, we even knew the words to these songs.  It just kept getting better, and the dance floor was absolutely packed.  We were up there too, including Bear & Jayne.  Larry & Annette are very smooth, they know the Gypsy Tap very well.  You cannot stop Lionel & Mary they were the first ones up there!  What a night it was – we hardly sat down.  We had to while the awards were being handed out.  These trophies had been made at the Goondiwindi High School in Manual Arts, and we gave the students a big cheer and congratulations at the beginning of the evening.  The awards were for -  the couple who had travelled the furthest; the oldest female still riding; the highest aged total for a couple.  Then we were treated to a session by the local volunteer Pipe Band, who just enjoyed themselves so much I believe they would have played all night if we had let them.

Then it was back to Tony, and more of our favourites Ben E King, Hooks, Elvis, Johnny Cash and the big hit was Johnny O’Keefe.  Now, we started something with Bear, he just wanted to keep on partying, and we were wilting fast.  We headed back to camp around 11 pm, and Bear opened the bar, but I have to confess that we didn’t last very long and Thommo and I crept away leaving the gang to party on.  We did hear some protests but we feigned sleep, and again we were the first away and the last ones up!  Not an image I care to boast about, but there are too many witnesses to deny it.

Now our last day dawns and we head off for our much anticipated country breakfast, and they do not disappoint.  Again it is huge, together with cereal this time, and a mountain of toast.  It seems about half the crowd now, so we all fit into the main hall quite comfortably.  I cannot believe how much food one can eat but it is delicious, and I am sure I am trying to delay the packing-up and seeing the end of a great week-end.

However, pack-up we must, and we all start the process of putting our camp away.  It all seems to be going along very well, but I have to point out here that the Thomas’ take a lo-o-o-ng time putting the camper away.  Our neighbours are all away well in advance to us, and it is suggested that they go and fuel up, and check for souvenirs and we will meet them at the garage as soon as we are ready.  Phew, now we can finish our packing, which includes wiping everything, folding everything away in there original packets – yes it is painful – but that is what we do.  We did it in record time as well, and we were waving good-bye to the organisers and heading down the road by 10-30 am.  We did a small detour around the block, but we met up with our trusty friends and we were heading for Brisbane via Toowoomba.

Now we have company, as we have a couple of  CB radios to keep in touch, it feels great.  Just a little sad that it has all come to an end so quickly but we have another great day to ride home.  How many glorious days can we have like this, again we are enjoying fabulous riding conditions, averaging 110 kph on this stretch.  We pulled into a Lions sponsored Drive/Revive station in Millmerran, and met up with a couple more riders heading home, including Barry & Rose, and enjoyed a coffee and homemade choc-chip cookie.  Then it is time to hit the road again, and we anticipate that we will have lunch in Toowoomba.  However, as we arrived in Toowoomba it was decided that we would pull up at the bottom of the range, find a café and say our final good-byes.

Again, we livened up the quiet little café and also rearranged the tables for our seating arrangements.  We have to say farewell now, and get back to the real world, our only excuse for a stop now is a call into Schultz Butcher Shop where Bear & Jayne’s son is working.  Which we do to add some fresh meat to our freezer, and with some encouragement from Bear we purchased a Wurst sausage, which I admit is definitely an acquired taste.  Not mine!

Now we are almost on our own, and we are on the home stretch.  We had a wonderful time and special thanks to our wing mates, Bear & Jayne, Larry & Annette, Lionel & Mary and Mal & Tina for such a memorable week-end.

That’s all folks – Thommo and Valerie.

What Were We Doing?

At a recent emotion-charged event in the Fisher household, Larry and Annette had the following conversation:-

Larry:     “Do you want to chew on my bone?”

Annette: “No.  But I will chew on your gristle.”
