The Editor Writes…..

Hello All

How lovely to be sitting down on a Saturday morning and have everything ready to start.  All the reports are in.  I might even get some riding in this weekend, in fact I know I will.  For me, riding is what it is all about.  Even a recent 15,000km ride hasn’t dampened my spirits.  I guess I’m just making up for the 20 year gap that my circumstances necessitated.

My 28-year-old son goes for his Q-Ride this weekend.  He likes riding too, though just on his traily so far.  He plans to upgrade to a road bike very soon.  My wish is that we both have many long rides - together and separately.

Contributions for this magazine can be emailed to info@auswingriders.com or posted to 47 Breslin St, Carina, Qld 4152.  Photos and slides can be scanned and returned.

Clint

The Secretary’s Desk

Hi Everyone,  You should be pleased to read that this desk is looking very tidy, but this is probably due to the fact that all is quiet on the correspondence front.  I have to admit that having a very tight schedule to get the minutes out for the magazine does eliminate the opportunity to dawdle around like I can do!  I have spoken to Sue at Helidon Spa Resort and they are looking forward to seeing us all - I wonder what she will really think when she does see us all!  Just a small reminder regarding our Xmas week-end, on arrival we can enjoy a pre-dinner session under the Gazebo, so BYO drinks and nibbles - not too much though, our menu looks good.

My only item on my Must Do List is to format a Welcome Letter for new members, which so far has been dominated by Victorians!  What is happening - Victorians are on the move!  But at least it gives us more people to meet on our travels - when it eventually happens.  I should have a draft letter ready for the boys to edit before our next meeting.  So until then see you all at the PARTY!!

Valerie

The President Speaks……

Group dynamics is an interesting thing.  Most things we do, we do with one or more other people.  When two or more people or animals gather in a group, the dynamics occurring make life very interesting.  This has long been a study of psychologists.  A group goes through many stages but one thing that often occurs is the group mentality.  If you recall, we noted this recently in some of the actions that occurred on rides where riders followed the one in front, oblivious to what was happening around them.

Aligned with group mentality is the "group think" process whereby the group follows any particular leader at a given point in time.  For anyone who has ever watched sheep being moved, it is like the situation of when a sheep jumps, most of those following leap over the same imaginary object.

A "group think" decision-making process often results from individuals making decisions based on how someone else votes and not wanting to be seen as "different".  If a group accepts or rejects an opinion, right or wrong, without understanding or thinking about it, how can we have confidence that the error is not in the thinking of the majority?  This can leave others feeling that the decision arrived at may not the best one put forward and, they may even feel alienated by the situation.  These people then find it difficult to give their best energy in support of the decision or the group.  For a group to remain strong it cannot operate like this because it will ultimately fragment under such stress.

Small groups are far more cohesive than large groups.  As groups grow in size, subgroups form and set themselves apart from the main group and can endanger group cohesiveness. This has happened in this group before and within other clubs we know.  It is up to all members interested in the wellbeing of the group to ensure that these situations do not occur.

"Group think" can be avoided by encouraging members to express differing opinions and to explore different approaches.  Individuals have unique life experiences to draw upon and can contribute to preventing "group think" by offering alternatives to the norm.

Ride safe and keep the shiny side up.

Bevan

RIDE REPORT

GYMPIE AND BEYOND

Sunday 19 Oct 2003

The Harriss’s, Thorley’s and Madjeric’s made our way to the appointed meeting place, BP Caboolture north with but a few drops of rain falling, traveling down the Bruce Highway just before the exit to the servo, we heard Larry on the CB and spotted him heading the other way (south), but only to turn around and join us for breakfast.

By the time we had finished brekky, Clint and Charleen had joined us and for a time it looked like it was going to be a small gathering, however by 8.30am we had a collection of 10 wings, including Spicky’s trike.

Also, by this time the heavens had opened up and it was fairly pouring, a hasty car park / coffee lounge meeting was called to discuss who wished to continue, initially 4 couples decided it looked like it would be too wet and opted out of the ride.

Wet Start

Purple People Mover

But as fate would have it 3 couples decided to rejoin us on the ride.  We set off down the Bruce toward Gympie and received a slight wetting down a few times before reaching Gympie.

Turning off the highway toward Goomeri the weather changed for the better, and by the time we reached Kilkivan (Kill-Kee-van?) for mornos, all opted to shed wet weathers and this proved to be a good decision as the weather improved and was quite warm for the rest of the day (poor buggers, those who decided to stay at home).

Women at Work

Leaving Kilkivan, we traveled via Goomeri and Murgon to Kingaroy for a refuel stop and a visit to the peanut van, Turbo agreed that the salt and vinegar nuts are particularly moreish.

Next stop was Yarraman for a good meal, and we don’t think that anyone was disappointed.  Relaxed and with full bellies we headed down the D’Aguilar highway toward Caboolture.

And then there were 4

Happy Tina & Mal

The Ipswich and beyond people left us at the Esk turnoff, and made their way home, whilst the remaining 4 couples headed toward Caboolture.

Deb and I shared a quick coffee with Clint and Charleen at Caboolture, discussed the ride and then headed home.

We traveled over 450 Km for the day, and despite the poor weather at the start, ended up with a very enjoyable ride with great company to boot.

Larry and Annette won first prize in the raffle and friends of ours from Nanango who joined us for lunch won second prize.

Thanks all.

October Social - BBQ C &C=s

Saturday 25th October dawned lovely, sunny & hot - perfect day for a ride.  Oh no, things to do, places to go first then fun later on.

Anyway after getting home about 3.30pm it=s a quick get ready, check the sky, not looking too good from the west but maybe we can race it!  Yep! we did with the first leg from Rosewood to Booval to meet at Brian & Anne=s - wait a while, no storm yet, then off on the second leg to Clint & Charleen=s for BBQ.

Arrive about 6.30pm (number two son called to say stay where you are, lightning huge here, number one son rang a while later to say same thing), no one else had arrived yet (storms must have something to do with it?).  Oh well, get out the nibblies and have a drink and a chat.  About 7.15 not waiting for others anymore, >lets cook=.  Next to arrive was Annette & Larry minus a >Wing but that=s OK, we=d all finished our cook up so we distracted them while they ate!  No ice-cream run this time, but lovely chokky treats & a cuppa from Clint and Charleen.

After enjoying C & C=s hospitality for a few hours we decided it was best to be heading home.  There hadn=t been much rain all night, only a little bit of thunder, but the light show was fantastic pretty much most of the time.

Turned out to be a beautiful night for a ride.

All in all a most enjoyable night, good food & good company.  Thank you

Jayne & Rob

RIDE TO  MURWILLUMBAH
From our friends at Northern Gateway

About thirteen bikes assembled, many of the riders had pillions, so with quite a good number to keep together, we left Carseldine a minute or two after nine. Sadly with two stops at toll ways, it was after ten by the time we left the freeway and picked up Allan and Mary along Beaudesert Road. At Beaudesert we met Rita and friends, another three bikes and this ended up as a toilet stop. Many were quite sad to hear that the morning tea stop was more than halfway along the Lion’s Road, as they were already looking forward to it.

Well, everyone did enjoy the stop when it finally came at about 11.30. A conveniently parked “tray” top truck provided our picnic table. Most had enjoyed the ride so far, the pillions especially loving the scenery. Some of the riders had had to concentrate on the road too much too take in the views of the beautiful countryside. Many had loved seeing the dozens of new foals on the thoroughbred farms at the beginning of the Lion’s Road. We all appreciated Wendy’s chocolate slice; just as well she hadn’t brought her usual cake. IT may not have weathered the Lion’s Road as well as the slice did.

After lots more twists and turns and bridges (25 in all), we reached the road into Kyogle where we stopped for petrol. Time was marching on, so we set off again for Murwillumbah, once again through some of the delightful countryside of northern N.S.W. We rode through Uki and on into the R.S.L. at about 1.45p.m. well and truly in need of lunch. Luckily it was a good one. Peter from Stanthorpe, was there waiting for us . His Goldwing made the fifth on the ride, to lend even more weight to the idea of it being Lionel’s “secret Goldwing Ride”.

No-one was interested in more sight seeing, as the ride calendar had indicated, so after lunch it was straight up the highway to Coomera where we had our final coffee stop and enjoyed more of Wendy’s cheese, olives etc,. I think we should give her a title of “Official Goodies Provider” for our rides. It was a pleasant way to complete a hopefully good ride of at least 450 kms.

The Bear’s Necessities

Tech Tips for the GoldWing from Rob Harriss

Air Cleaner Elements - check/replace for GL1500

PART 1. OK time to take off the seat and back rest (if applicable).  Open the fuel door, flick the two white >hold down clamps= back.  Undo the two 10mm dome headed nuts at the base of the top compartment  cover.  Unclip and remove cover.  Unplug radio plug and put cover in safe place.  Now, undo the screws around the AIR BOX.  Clip the emission control valve out.  Remove top of air box.  Hey Presto! you will see an Air Cleaner Element , remove and inspect.  It=s possibly a very dirty one.  Clean out the air box and replace dusted or new (if necessary) Air Cleaner Element. Your >Wing will notice and sigh relief, it may even start to breath properly.  You’re not finished yet, now carry on with the >put back together= ritual.

PART 2. Now behind your left front side cover you will find two plastic tubes with two black stoppers at the end.  These are >waste drains=.  Put a rag under the tubes and remove the stoppers.  Drain all fluids and replace stoppers.  They should be drained every 12 months or in service.

If you have any problems phone Bear on 0409052218.

RIDE DATES: Rides will be on the 3rd Sunday of the month, and Social rides, the following Saturday.

** Ride organizers: Please check the details of your ride and let me know of any changes.

IMPORTANT: Even if you have not finalised the details of your ride, just supply the start time & location, the general direction of the ride, and the meal arrangements.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY:

It is the personal responsibility of each motorcyclist to be responsible for at least the following;

The roadworthiness of your vehicle (including trailer)

That you are in a fit condition to control the vehicle, (including trailer)

Make sure you have a full tank of fuel before departing on a ride.

That you obey all the traffic rules and ride in a safe manner.

That you ride in a considerate manner that does not endanger, or unnecessarily inconvenience other road users.

To be correctly attired for safe motorcycling.

To have fun and enjoy the day, and the company.

WOO'S WOES:

I am sorry about all the T B A‘s but when it takes a team of wild horses to drag suggestions from people as to where to go, let alone trying to get anyone to even, (heaven forbid) lead a ride, this is what happens. I really am tired of pushing and begging for suggestions. I do not mind being ride coordinator if there is something to coordinate, but if I have to keep begging, there will be a position up for grabs very soon.

Rosewood Ride, September 2003
Some photos is all I got.

THE DAM

Rob has a large dam on his property at Rosewood, set up nicely. Picnic tables, shade trees, BBQ, etc
The dam was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming when it was dug.

One evening Rob decided to go down to the dam, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. As he neared the dam, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny dipping in his dam.

He was stunned, and just stood there at the end of the dam. One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

Rob replied, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim or make you get out of the dam naked. I only came to feed the crocodile.”
