Hi all.
Our first meeting at the new venue this month. It was very nice. Quite a few more people dine there than the previous place, so it
gets a bit noisy. But our group can
hold their own when it comes to noise.
A new bike has joined the Lovell family - Charleen now rides a Yamaha
XJ600 Seca II. Bright red so she can be
seen. It will be her commuter and
she’ll still join me on Lucille on club rides.
You never know, when her confidence is up you might see Charleen riding
the ‘Wing. Eek.
Contributions for this magazine can be emailed to info@auswingriders.com or posted to 47 Breslin St, Carina, Qld 4152. Photos and slides can be scanned and returned.

From the Secretary’s Desk
Happiness has been defined as “The progressive achievement of a worthy ideal or goal.” In riding a Goldwing happiness could be defined as the journey towards that ‘goal’, the ride destination; or just the navigation of a road/s never traveled before. As with all circumstances in our lives, our destiny is what we make it. The same can be applied to our club, we are the ones who define it and what it is to become. I don’t believe we are confined or restricted to any one area or district, we should be encouraging others outside our own ‘comfort zone’ to join us in what we enjoy, that is, riding motor cycles and enjoying fellowship and the company of others and be prepared to enter their ‘comfort zone’ also.
From
the Treasurer
A reminder to all members that Membership fees will be due as of the end of the month, ie: 28 Feb 03. Fees can be paid at the monthly meeting or mailed to me at P O Box. 652, Ipswich, 4305. Prompt payment is appreciated, as apart from our ride raffles, this is our only other source of income with which to fund the club.

As I write this, the rain is
still falling outside. With the
exception of Wednesday, it has rained every day this week. Beautiful, need the rain to make the gardens
and grass grow, fills the dams so we have drinking water and makes sure I don’t
forget how to wash the bike. Not the
best time for motorcyclists, soggy boots, wet shirt and pants, water sneaking
into the helmet. All that stuff, how
could anyone not enjoy it. I often
wonder if it is actually possible to get truly waterproof gear. As the water trickles in, I remember Peter’s
philosophy on wet weather gear. Peter
reckons it’s good gear if the water penetration rate does not exceed the rate
at which the body can heat the wet patches.
Probably a fair comment.
It’s been a good week
though, my first back after holidays.
No accidents on the road, no big moments even though there has been rain
which usually brings out the wet weather only car drivers. Speaking of car drivers, I arrived at the
meeting last Monday and thought I was in the wrong place. Not a Goldwing in sight! I was impressed to see how everyone looks
after their bikes by keeping them warm and dry on rainy nights.
I was reading an interesting
article from America the other day on oils.
We’ve all seen the blurb, motorcycle oils are specially formulated for
motorcycles, car oils aren’t good enough.
Motorcycle Consumer News decided to put that to the test with surprising
results. The test came about due to the
significant difference in cost between car and motorcycle oils. While many of the oils tested may not be
available in Australia, it would be interesting to see what sort of results
would be achieved in Australia. If you
want to see the article, it can be accessed through the Allmoto.com.au website.
I see today’s Courier Mail
Road Sense column is reminding motorists to look out for motorcycles when
overtaken or changing lanes, reminding them that bikes accelerate and brake
faster. A good reminder, hope the motorists
read it.
Keep the shiny side up and the black bits on the bitumen..

Hi everyone, The Capricornia branch had a
good ride a couple of weeks ago while Brent was up for a weeks holiday. Bob Gatehouse, Robert and Penny
Kummerfeld, Brent Storey, Dale and myself all had a local ride. The view was a dry one but the ride was
well worth it. From Goovigen to
Biloela and then we headed out to the Banana Store were we all had a quick
drink stop. Heading home we traveled
through to Rannes and then on to Goovigen for our club meeting. We were joined by a tired Peter in
Goovigen. He had just got back from meetings in Bundaberg and was glad to
stop for the night. Our meeting was
over in no time and we all got down to catching up. Bob headed for Mt Morgan shortly after and Robert and Penny had
to head up to Biloela to pick up their four children. And the rest of us sat back and rested for
the night. It was great to catch up with
everyone again. I am sorry that this
newsletter is short but the power has been going off and on. Goovigen has had just under 14 inches and
we can't get out. It seems we went
from dry drought to raining flood. So until next time Bye for now. |

Caboolture
to Montville Scenic / Dinner Ride – Sat 18th Jan
I guess that everyone who sets out a ride has an idea of
what experience he wants to present for the club members. In my case, I’ve been
riding through the Beerburrum/Glasshouse Mountains/Maleny Range area for years,
mostly on dirt bikes, and wanted to show this area a little more up close and
personal; rather than the scenic backdrop view you get when traveling up the
main highway. But I was still surprised to find many new to me, old roads
through this area, which in turn, enabled me to select an interesting route. I
know many club members have been through this area for years also, but I think I
was still able to show them some new sights, and views, which is what I wanted.
Unfortunately, the brilliant afternoon sunshine and soft
twilight that I enjoyed when setting out the route, were absent on the
afternoon of the ride. Scheduled for 5:00pm meeting at the BP North Burpengary,
we found a group of approx 18 bikes and one trike ready for the 5:30 departure.
In line with recommendations from our previous club meeting, I gave a short
Ride Captains address, welcoming all along, addressing basic group ride safety
issues, and a rough idea of the intended route. I particularly wanted to
impress this was intended as a sightseeing experience, at a moderate pace,
unlike some of the more frenetic highway experiences of late. Lead Rider and
Tail End Charlie were appointed, and we were set to roll. We had quite a few
new faces along, and not only on Wings either. Turbo’s mate Chris Walker was
down from Toowoomba, new Wing owner Winston Jones (99 SE) came with Yola, and
friends David and Sandi Connelly on a Harley. An old acquaintance Craig Brown
(94 Aspy) was along, and even Doug & Dee on their new Marauder came for a
cruise.
Good to see Steve and Liz Major along, also Noel and Kay
Perren from Caboolture with more friends – even big Terry made it over from the
island with Fiona in tow – the more, the merrier!

Leaving the BP, the short run up the Highway to the
Caboolture turnoff gave everyone a chance to settle in, and then we turned
north out of Caboolture following the Old Gympie Road. It eventually detours
onto Smith Road, and back onto Beerburrum Road - the old Highway North. I
remember spending many hours parked on this road, trying to get back to
Brisbane from the Sunshine Coast on Sunday afternoons … thank God for the new
highway!! At Beerburrum itself, we turned west again on the Woodford Road, then
eventually picked up the Old Gympie road again, heading north. This road takes
us thru the heart of the Glass House Mountains National Park – a well kept
secret, so close to Brisbane! Mention over the CB’s of a short 5km stretch of
gravel road along bought a momentary silence, followed by many loud comments –
some of them very rude! As it was eventually determined to be a hoax, we
continued on enjoying some of the impressive Glasshouse peaks at close
proximity. Finally, nearing Beerwah, we turn west again on the Kilcoy-Beerwah
Road towards Peachester – this road has a section with corners to delight the
heart of any motorcyclist … I always
have a big grin on my face after going up or down (sometimes both!) this
section.
Past Peachester, we turn onto the Maleny-Stanley River road, which climbs the range and loops around into the southern side of Maleny. We took a small detour along Mountain View Road here, stopping at a scenic outlook from where we could see south across the Glass House Mountains, which we had just ridden through. Even though the cloud cover made it dark enough to need lights from this point on, it is still spectacular. The cool changes as we were coming up the range, also meant quite a few of us were rummaging in the saddlebags for jackets and sweaters. After some photo ops, and a leg stretch, we were away again, past King Ludwig’s Restaurant (site of a previous Goldwing club Xmas debauchery) and onto the Maleny-Montville road. This has to be one of the most spectacular roads in Australia, and with its great loops, climbs and dives, reminding me of a giant roller coaster. The incredible views of the Sunshine Coast were muted by the encroaching darkness, and the smoke from a small bushfire down on the coastal flats rose in a flattened plume towards the Blackall Range. The lights of the coastal towns sparkled into life as we continued towards our destination at Montville.
|
|
Finally, at 7.00pm, here we are – the Penefathings Inn (spelling correct!) restaurant, where after a little confusion in the graveled, sloping parking lot; we were met by mine host, Riy Fathers, who shouted the group a welcoming round of drinks. The restaurant is well situated on the edge of the Blackall range, with sweeping views of the Sunshine Coast. The usual rush for the chow line eventuated, and a good choice of very reasonably priced meals were available. Soon we were tucking in to an excellent meal, with the usual camaraderie found amongst feasting GoldWingers world wide. Riy was very interested in the Wings, as he had previous experience with the Wing Club down south. He mentioned that they do a big breakfast for the bikers also - sounds like a great idea for future reference.

After everyone was finished, and relaxed, conversation
turned to dessert! It was eventually decided that an ice cream at Caloundra
would be just the thing. So, a little after 9.00, we remounted our trusty
steeds and motored off into the night, traveling north past the Mapleton hotel.
From there, the descent down the range into Nambour is another exhilarating
piece of road, especially for motorcycles. I gained the impression that there
were a few ‘handbrakes’ firmly applied on the downhill curves, to prevent
excessive exuberance!! Some comments from the tail end riders indicated the
train of lights following these curves down, made for a spectacular sight!
Safely down into Nambour, and back onto the Bruce Highway and taking the
Mooloolaba Road across to the Sunshine Motorway, then south thru to Caloundra.
Looking for the car park near the ice cream shop was interesting, with some of
the bikes opting to park on the footpath across the road. Fortunately, the
Police when they passed shortly afterwards seemed to pay little attention. A
parade of Corvettes cruising past added a little more entertainment for the
spectators.
Ice creams (and grass juice – yuck!) safely disposed of;
the last leg home was back onto the Bruce Hwy, and planned for a coffee stop at
the BP Burpengary south. A little concern was caused when the borrowed BMW with
Lionel and Mary aboard starting slowing on the highway. A quick stop at Moby
Vic’s determined the problem was only low fuel, and as the lead bikes had
already passed that point, we eventually met up at the BP as planned. After a
coffee, we all broke into smaller groups, heading for our home destinations –
we arrived home just after 12.00, a little tired, but having thoroughly enjoyed
our evening – I hope that everyone enjoyed theirs also.
Of course, this should have been easy for everyone to do -
with a White Wing leading, to add some real class to the group for a change …..

Ever noticed how all the horoscopes in the
papers and magazines are always so Nice?
Surely everyone can’t be that good. So here’s what people are really like. What’s your star sign?
You have an inventive mind and are inclined to
be progressive. You lie a great deal. On the other hand you are inclined to be
careless and impractical, causing you to make the same mistakes repeatedly.
Everyone thinks you a jerk
You have a vivid imagination and often think you are being followed by the C.I.A. or A.S.I.O. You have a minor influence over your good friends and people resent you for flaunting your power. You lack confidence and you are a coward. Pisces people love small farm animals... literally, and pick their noses.
You are a pioneer type and hold most people in
contempt. You are quick tempered and scornful of advice. You are a prick.
You are practical. and persistent. You have
dogged determination and work like hell. Most people think you are stubborn and
bull-headed. You are nothing but a goddamn communist.
You are quick, intelligent and a thinker. People like you because you are bisexual.
However, you are inclined to expect much too little. This means you are a cheap
bastard. Geminis are notorious for thriving on incest.
You are sympathetic and understanding to other
peoples problems. They think you are a
sucker. You are always putting things
off. This is why you will always be on
welfare and won’t be worth a penny.
You consider yourself a born leader but others
think you are pushy.. Most Leos are bullies. You are vain and cannot tolerate
honest criticism. Your arrogance is disgusting. Leo people are thieving
bastards and kiss mirrors a lot.
You are the logical type and hate disorder.
This shit picking is sickening to your friends. You are cold and unemotional
and quite often fall asleep while bonking. Virgos make good bus drivers and
pimps.
You are the artistic type and have a difficult
time with reality. If you are male you are probably queer. Chance of employment
and monetary gain are excellent. Most Libra women are whores. All Librans die
of venereal disease.
You are shrewd in business and cannot be
trusted. You shall achieve the pinnacle of success because of your total lack
of ethics. You are a perfect son of a bitch. Most Scorpio people are murdered.
You are optimistic and enthusiastic. You have a
reckless tendency to rely on luck since you have no talent. The majority of Sagittarians are drunks and
pot heads. People laugh because you are always getting screwed
You are conservative and afraid of taking
risks. You are basically “Chicken Shit”
There has never been a Capricorn of any importance. You should kill yourself.

IMPORTANT:
EVEN IF YOU HAVN’T FINALISED THE DETAILS OF YOUR RIDE, JUST SUPPLY THE START
LOCATION & TIME, THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE RIDE, AND THE MEAL
ARRANGEMENTS.
It is
the personal responsibility of each motorcyclist to be responsible for at least
the following:
Ø
The
roadworthiness of their vehicle, (including trailer)
Ø
That
they are in a fit condition to control the vehicle, (including trailer)
Ø
That
they obey the traffic rules and ride in a safe manner
Ø
That
they ride in a considerate manner that does not endanger, or unnecessarily
inconvenience other road users
Ø
To be correctly attired for safe
motorcycling
**HINT
Why do we ride? Because we love it.
Why do we ride Gold Wings? Because
we can, (and they’re the best).
Does it matter where we ride? Not
really, (as long as it is not gravel).
Is the destination important? Yes,
but not as important as the ride.
Does it matter who we ride with? Not
if everyone respects each other and they like to ride as much as we do.
Does it matter what they ride? No,
as long as they can keep up.
Does it matter how we ride? Yes, see
“PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY”, (above), and read Bevan’s comments in last month’s
newsletter.
It’s a simple equation isn’t it? Let’s
keep it simple and keep doing it.
Safe riding.
