The Editor’s View
Hi All
Just a short View this month. A couple of good stories and lots of preparations for Christmas. Next meeting – to be held straight after the Christmas Party – we’ll be needing to organise a new meeting place. Put on your thinking caps for something central in Brisbane that has available meals and drinks and, above all, is free. Better write the details down as we may be a bit seedy at the meeting.
Contributions can be emailed to info@auswingriders.com or posted to 47 Breslin St, Carina, Qld 4152. Photos and slides can be scanned and returned.

Sort of get out of practice writing reports after so long away. Nevertheless I survived the ‘confidence course’ of my grandchildren in Townsville and escaped with most of my hair intact. Unfortunately this meant I had to miss some recent rides which was a bit hard to take. Judging from the reports they were interesting and enjoyable. And with more members joining the club, future rides can only be more enjoyable as these people bring new ideas in.
Xmas at Coolum should be a blast and will give us an opportunity to catch up with our ‘northern’ friends.

From the President

Last month I posed the question of whether we should/could offer any type of support for visiting Goldwingers. Under whelmed as I was by the lack of response, I thought I’d raise it again this month as a prelude to discussing it at the next meeting. I ask you all to consider what our position should be. Consider again the question of how willing would we be to make ourselves available to visitors from overseas, or from interstate for that matter?; If we do favour this, should we make it clear that we do and that visiting Goldwingers should contact the club.
With about 6 weeks to Christmas, I’m sure you will be looking forward to some Christmas goodies and the ‘Wing could do with a special Christmas treat. To help you meet these needs and to raise some money for the club and our charity, we’ll raffle the usual Christmas hamper at the Christmas dinner. Brent and I thought for this year, if everyone bought something along next ride, (this Sunday), to throw into the hamper, then we should be able to build a good prize without too much outlay. The raffle includes a gift voucher on Big Bike Bitz to satisfy your ‘Wing’s needs.
We’re off to Stanthorpe this coming weekend and this entails a visit to at least one winery. I’ve been trying to convince Therese that now would be a good time to get a license to ride the ‘Wing, then I could sample some of the local produce. No luck though; seems she wants to do the sampling. Might even be able to get a bottle for the hamper.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on the ride,
Keep the shiny side up.
The Drool Factor
The 2004 Valkyrie to be released in USA. I hope we get it here. Charleen doesn’t (no back seat). It is called the Rune and you can find out more at www.hondamotorcycles.com. There’s even a video clip.

Letter to the Editor Gosh it was lovely to arrive at the Goldwing meeting last night to a warm welcome. I know it was no great feat to drive myself through relatively unknown territory to get there, with Lionel away, but I made it, and was so pleased I did. Thanks everyone, it’s wonderful to belong to this great little Goldwing club (A.W.R.A.-Brisbane Branch) Mary Jacobson |

Well, we didn’t have a bike, ours was in getting a few new plastic bits glued back on, but that didn’t stop us from going for fish and chips.
We squeezed into the car and made our way to Wynnum and the Pelican’s Rest and met up with eight others on three bikes and another car!! Chris and Cheryl had sold their beautiful blue wing and were awaiting the arrival of the new wheels.
We lined up and placed our orders just in time, before a big influx of customers, and shortly after were tucking into big plates of seafood and spud. Yum!

Naturally, this was a night ride, so with full tummies it was time to ride some of it off. We all decided on Mt Cootha for ice creams and coffee so off we went.

| Setting up for the night ride | |
We fell in behind and enjoyed watching the lights of the bikes as we made our round about way to the mountain.
At first it felt like going to Charleen’s work as we made our way across the Storey Bridge, then as we angled toward Spring Hill, it was like going to Bevan’s work. Then we headed out towards Ashgrove just like going to Thommo’s work. Luckily we didn’t go to anyone’s work, but eventually made our way up the mountain to the car park.
Then it was out to have a look at the beautiful view of the city lights. It’s one we tend to take for granted and a few of us hadn’t been up here at night for several years. It was a bit cool, so it was decided to have coffee inside.
It was a good night – good food with good people on a good ride. Who could ask for more? (A bike?)

RIDE REPORT
NIGHT RIDE TO MOOLOOLABA – Saturday 19th October
What a great night. The ride was put together in a hurry with virtually no planning. One of those TBAs that had the TB but not the A.
Having said that, the members present at the immediately preceding club meeting decided that a night ride would be the order of the day / night?
The Black Dog Restaurant at Mooloolaba was chosen because of the great meal we had there earlier in the year.
This is a very popular restaurant, so we made a tentative booking for 20. They wanted definite numbers by Saturday morning so between Bevan and myself we did a ring around, and confirmed 15 attendees.
We set the meeting
place for the southsiders at the Gateway Bridge to depart at 6pm, (5.45 for
the Bradfords). We had four bikes meet there and at 6pm we set off for the
second meeting place which was to be the Caboolture BP. After sitting all in a
row at the Gateway Bridge for several minutes with our engines running trying
to work out who would lead, I decided to lead off. I probably did not win the
debate, but neither Mary nor I could hear the conversation, (no CB radio), so
we just took off and the rest followed. It was great to see a new Phantom
Silver Wing join us which made three at this point.
Not everyone knows the location of the Gateway Bridge or the Caboolture BP so we picked up one good looking couple near the airport turnoff, and another handsome pair in the bush at Boondall, and the six of us made our way to Caboolture.
On our arrival at Caboolture we were greeted by two more Phantom Silver Wings, and a red one which made nine bikes and 17 people. The greys finally outnumbered the red bikes and proved that the grey ones are best. We had some new people along as well and the way that they fitted in with our group just proves that we aren’t the only ones out there that are a couple of drops short of a keg. They were great company and I hope they return for more of the same.
What a great sight it was looking in the mirrors and seeing nine ‘Wings on a night ride. Actually I could only see eight because I couldn’t see mine in my mirrors unless I just stood on one peg, and Mary complains when I do that. The weather was perfect with a balmy 120 kilometre per hour breeze wafting over the windscreen. It was an exhilarating, if uneventful ride and we arrived at our parking spot at Mooloolaba at a bit after 7pm. This is definitely the weather for night rides.

We all enjoyed a fabulous meal at the restaurant, with a couple of the waiters asking why Brent was not there. They were heartbroken which shows what a hit he was with the wait staff last time.
With the meal over, we decided that an ice cream would be in store, and headed off to Noosa to find an ice cream parlour, (as you do). It was an excellent ride up the David Lowe Highway, and even at night those bends are fun on a bike. I guess they don’t get to see nine ‘Wings at once too many times in Noosa, and it caused some interest with the Nouveau Riche. It got to be a bit of a frenzy, and John mistook two mature ladies that were chatting him up for potential buyers and wasted a good sales pitch on them. Anne knew exactly what they wanted and saved the day.

The ice cream was good but the price set our goal of a new bike back a few months. That devoured, we set off for BP Caboolture South via Noosaville, Tewantin and Eumundi. With yours truly in the lead we charged off into the night full of food and good cheer.
The absolute high point of the night for me was when we were traveling behind Tewantin, with me in the lead without a clue where I was, and there emerging out of the darkness was something I recognised. I didn’t know where it was, but I immediately knew then that if we were to be lost, it would be in familiar surroundings. With new confidence I twisted the throttle a little more so the group behind would maintain their confidence in my leadership and navigational ability.
We moped on at such a leisurely pace that a few of the ladies nodded off and some had to have their belts passed through the hand grips, and one innovative person velcroed their shoes to the foot boards to stop from falling off. It was so casual that even Ray nodded off for a bit, and he was sitting in the riding position. When he woke up we were a fair way in front, and he had to do 140 to catch up. That will teach him to pay attention.
On arrival at
Caboolture BP we discovered one of our troop was missing. They had stopped at
the Moby Vic’s Mobil for fuel, and showed up a bit later. It was really
educational actually, because when they caught up to us at the BP, they were
so excited that they overshot the service station. It was inspirational to see
a new world record being set for a Goldwing in reverse. Well Done.
With a gallon of coffee inside us, and matchsticks under our eyelids we headed off for home. Mary & I covered a tad under 300ks for the night and had a great time. Can’t wait for the next ride. Don’t miss out.

THE PRESENT
"Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them - work, family, health, friends and spirit. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls - family, health, friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life." How? Don't undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special. Don't set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you. Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life, for without them, life is meaningless. Don't let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future.
By living your life one day at a time, you live ALL the days of your life. Don't give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying. Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us to each other. Don't be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave. Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; and the best way to keep love is to give it wings. Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where you are going. Don't forget that a person's greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated. Don't be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily. Don't use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savoured each step of the way. Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery and Today is a gift. That's why we call it The Present.
Subject: Healthy Eating
Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.
Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable slop.
Q: Is beer or wine bad for me?
A: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three categories: animal, mineral, and vegetable. We all know that beer and wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements, so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a burger and a beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables.
Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.
Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain - Good.
Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: You're not listening. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?
Q: What's the secret to healthy eating?
A: Thicker gravy.
Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.
Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? Cocoa beans... Another vegetable. It's the best feel good food around!
I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.
