The Editor’s View

Hi All

Another month and some more good articles from rides.  Thank you to everyone who was punctual with reports.  Some were even way early (‘onya Turbo and Wendy)

As most know, I had a little mishap this month and had to be subject of the Shame File.  DAMN!!  Happily though, I was wearing good protective gear and was practically unharmed.  The bike will take a little longer to heal.

Want an email that identifies you as a Wing Riders Member?  Members can now have <yourname>@auswingriders.com.  You can check your emails via your usual email program at home/work, or via the web anywhere you can log on.  When you’re on that long ride, call in to any cyber café and read and write emails by logging on to www.auswingriders.com.  How convenient is that?  Contact me for details.

Contributions can be emailed to info@auswingriders.com or posted to 47 Breslin St, Carina, Qld 4152.   Photos and slides can be scanned and returned.

My apologies once again but regrettably family commitments prevent me from attending the monthly meeting and ride again this month.   I will be in Townsville for most of the month babysitting my grandchildren whilst my son & daughter-in-law attend RAAF training courses.

On the club front, another member into our ranks, welcome to Paul Evers from Andrews, down on the Gold Coast.

Don’t forget to get your accommodation bookings in for our Xmas function in November – details from Annette.

From the President

Writing something for this month has been a bit of a problem.  Nothing has happened to stir the emotions and abstract thought processes apart from having a few episodes of being forced off the road by idiots driving cars.  I certainly had some abstract thoughts of what I would like to do to them.  This, together with some discussion at our Fish and Chip night regarding a message in our web-site guest book, has provided the catalyst.

Anyone visiting the guest book will have seen a reference to Guardian Whales.  This group was formed in 1998 in memory of Errol Ansell, a Cairns member of our group, after he was killed in an accident in America.  Traveling by himself, he apparently forgot where he was in left –hand drive country and rounded a blind bend on the incorrect side of the road.  Errol’s mother was living in Mooloolaba and the Club planted a tree in a park there, in memoriam to Errol.  Errol was well known through his web contacts and Guardian Whales was formed by world wide Goldwing groups to support overseas riders while visiting other countries.  The idea being that local members would be available to lead them through cities, provide a point of contact and generally assist them to enjoy their stay and experience of the host country.

I have been doing some searching on the web, but I have been unable to find whether Guardian Whales is still active.  Any information available from other members would be appreciated.  Certainly the idea is an excellent one.  Our knowledge of the local area could certainly give them a view that they may not get otherwise.

I ask a couple of questions of members; How do we respond to such requests?; How willing are we to make ourselves available to visitors from overseas, or from interstate for that matter?;  If we do favour this, should we make it clear that we do and that visiting Goldwingers should contact the club.

Over to you and remember “Learn from the mistakes of others, you may not live through yours”

Keep the shiny side up.

Bevan

Goovigen Duck

Northern Wing Club

Hi to everyone I hope this newsletter finds everyone in good health. Dale’s hand is better and he is back riding on his beloved bike instead of sitting on it in the shed.  It was great to see Brent, Rae and Tegan on their way through to Townsville.  Peter came down for the day from Rockhampton.  We all had a great social day, laid back with bellies full and relaxing with the motorbike racing going on in the back ground.  Unfortunately we were unable to get hold of Bob who has been working away from home lately.  While the Storeys were in town Dale gave Tegan and RAE their first motorbike lessons on Hayleigh's Honda z50.  I was lucky enough to loan some children size road signs from playgroup so we had roads set up and kids where given points.  Rae and I lost all of ours.  The club line up this time has some smaller future wing riders in it. The day was finished off with a boys ride up to the Jambin pub for a beer and bike fill up.  Brent borrowed Dale's GL1000 and by the time he got back he knew why he rode a bike with a fairing.

We have extra good news this month. We have two new members to add to our group.  Robert and Penny Kummerfeld of Goovigen have joined and are looking forward to meeting everyone on the Christmas Party Ride.  Robert and Penny have brought Dale's GL1200 ("The Other Woman") and now they both have the Goldwing bug really bad.  That’s about all the news we have this month.

The Northern Wingers Riders never miss a good party if it can be avoided so we will all see you in November.

"Bike Service Day - On The Deck"

Saturday 14th September - what a great excuse to get Ray to clean-up at Yeronga. We have the Wings coming over!!

The Thomas household was in super spring-clean mode for a whole week, together with Noel Ashton (Romeo) nervously getting ready to leave for Canada, so just imagine all of us racing around this Saturday morning making everything ship(bike)-shape.  Thommo and Asho left for the airport at 9 a.m. we couldn't stand Asho's fidgeting any longer, and the remainder of the morning was preparations.

All in good time - Clint was punctual at 1.30p.m. thinking he was the last to arrive, he was first and the rest followed.  The only girl to keep me company was Therese - Thank You Therese!  We chatted, and the men disappeared downstairs. I don't know how much "mechanical information" was executed, but Ray dismantled the headlight, found 'things' and put it all back together again for the very first time!  Whatever mechanical gems were exchanged needed plenty of beer as well, so the men enjoyed themselves!

The ladies who had been shopping and having fun came later, and Therese and I were duly impressed at their prowess on finding our address in the dark!

The party commenced at 6.30p.m. with Ray showing-off his Bar-B-Que. His cooking style is still being perfected - P Plates is about the rate.  However, he was thrown a few challenges with Salmon Patties, Steak, Chicken and sausages and heaps of onions and more beer.  Along with plenty of club chatter, we tried very hard to extend the car-park meeting making significant decisions on further social outings and bike-rides!  We even took the opportunity to light up the brasserie. It certainly kept the chill away but it couldn't keep my eyes awake as we sped up to 10-30p.m.

Again, a great night, thank you to everyone who came, I just wish I could rage longer!
Until next time - keep safe.

Valerie & Thommo

TURBO’S ASSASSINATED RIDE

Leaving here on Saturday morning, early. Oops!

Change no 1. Of which we were informed on the Monday night before the ride. That’s ok, we can both do with a good sleep in anyway. Meet every one out at the BP Blacksoil. Had a good rollup with Turbo and me (on a red one), Larry and Annette, (on a red one), Ray and Val, (on a red one), and Lionel and Mary, (on a Magenta one).

The decision was made by all (?) to have some breakfast? Morning tea?, lunch?, but some of us were not listening. After some discussion we decided to go via Toowoomba, through to Warwick where we were going to stop for lunch. This decision was again made by all. At this point Clint and Charleen, (on ---- you guessed it, ANOTHER red one) joined us, and MAGENTA decided it was just too much and spat the dummy. She was surrounded by red ones, including the two busses that pulled up either side of us while we were having lunch, she didn’t want to play anymore.

With a few good words, and a jolt (not only to the bike, but Lionel’s heart as well) we were on our way again. This time having decided (between all of us) that it was best to go straight to Texas via Inglewood. We would leave Glen Lyon Dam till Sunday. Upon arriving at the Motel we parked the bikes and went to meet our hosts, a very nice couple by the name of John and Rita. John had some beers on ice, which the guys gladly got stuck into and we all sat and talked for a while, selling raffle tickets, eating munchies, and generally relaxing. The raffle was won by Lionel and Mary, a choice of two Mini Goldwings, (guess which colour Mary chose?). We had six to raffle so everyone ended up with one each, including John and Rita.

We decided to “spread the wealth” and go to the pub for dinner, and believe me, when they say the meals are TEXAS size, they are. So, after a thoroughly good meal, some fine wine (and other beverages), a spot of footy, good conversation and company, (including the change of itinerary for Sunday- you guessed right- agreed to by all) we slowly –and some of us not so straight, headed for our beds.

WHAT A WAKE UP CALL! Some one forgot to tell John we usually sleep in on Sundays. 6.30 AM. THE PHONE RINGS, breakfast is ready. That’s ok ,we’ve got a long day planned, but I really do think someone ought to explain to Val that you cannot turn the alarm off by hitting the phone. You actually have to answer the *#@*^# thing before it will stop making a noise.

The trip home, Glenlyon Dam, Tenterfield, Ballina, New Highway home, via Nando’s for afternoon tea. The back road through to Glenlyon Dam was (supposedly) a good road, with “only 2K” of dirt. Clint, you really need to get your speedo checked, because boy, is it out. I never want to hear “nearly there” again. In all honesty though, it was fun. Lots of twisty turns and good country road.

We stopped at the dam to refuel, bikes and us, then off to Ballina for lunch at the Big Prawn. Off again to the new stretch of Burringbar Bypass. SMOOOOTH! And fast. Afternoon tea at Nando’s was as always a treat. Poor Lindsay still has not got his Wing back, so we (courtesy of Larry and Annette) gave him a mini one to dream over. From Nando’s we all went our separate ways home, but I do have to say this. A more relaxing and enjoyable weekend I have not had in a long time. The only thing I really would have changed, would have been to prevent Turbo from POLISHING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT (including, seat, armrests, and footpads) before we left home VERRRRY SLIPPERRRRY. . .

Turbo and Wendy

Texas or Bust cont: Extra comments from the other conspirators:

Mary:  Considering I felt I was nearly on deaths door, and nearly did not go on the ride, I had an extra wonderful time and the good company and enjoyable ride seemed to banish all the last of my ills.

Ray and Valerie: Thanks Turbo – we changed times, destinations, meal arrangements and it all went very well. The dirt road according to “4 wheel drive speedo” is “approx” 2 Km. – but on a Goldwing it really did feel a bit longer, -- like 6 Km. The views were well worth it. The motel in Texas deserves another visit, - and the difference between Tenterfield and Casino, was as if a green carpet had been thrown over, -- Magic. Company was great, rides are always wonderful.

Val: Excellent weekend Turbo. Delete the 3-ins. Good company, good accommodation, good riding and good food Thanks.

Clint:  Great run and good to see all the Red Wings.  They ARE best.  I swear someone added some dirt to that 2km.  Amazing how different it feels in different vehicles.  I’m getting better on dirt, but I’ll need more than 20 years to get better than Turbo on corners.

The Shame File

Well, I have to put myself in this month.  My first fair dinkum prang on a bike.  Worst part was I was technically at fault as I ran into the back of a car.  The only thing I can say in my defense was that the other driver moved off onto the roundabout then stopped.  He claimed the car in front of him caused this, but I wouldn’t know, I was looking the other way.

Luckily, it was a low speed incident and no one was injured, apart from a sore right wrist.

Because I wasn’t even aware he had stopped, the first thing I knew was my front wheel hitting his bumper.  Came as a complete surprise to me.  The bike stopped about six inches into his bumper and I continued into my windscreen and fairing, then did a spectacularly awkward dismount, landing on my hands and knees on the bitumen beside the bike.

Protective gear, good gloves, strong jacket and Draggin jeans meant I was almost completely unscathed.  Just a little skin removed from the left knee.

I had my first experience of picking up a Goldwing and the “back to the seat and use the knees” method worked a treat.

Exchange names and addresses and a quick inspection assured both vehicle were drivable and we were both on our way.

Damage?  The forks look OK and a few plastic bits need replacing but otherwise OK.  Pro Honda will be giving it a thorough checkout and doing the repairs.
