The Editor’s View

One down and no complaints!!

Everyone seemed happy with my first attempt, so I guess I’ll just keep going until I get a complaint.

You might notice that I’ve worked a little on the cover graphics, to try to keep the Logo in line with our original design.  The colours don’t show up as well as they could against the orange background, but I have to use up the paper at hand.  Couple more issues and we might have a change.  Perhaps some blue denim colour.

Just in case you haven’t noticed, I will be putting the venue for the next meeting on the inside front cover of each magazine.

Good to see lots of contributions from the Northern Splinter Group.  Something for the rest of us to strive for…

Contributions can be emailed to clint@lovell.com.au or posted to 47 Breslin St, Carina, Qld 4152.   Photos and slides can be scanned and returned.

    From the Secretary’s Desk

Well, a bit of a wake-up call for everyone with the cooler temperatures in the mornings.   Thankfully I have had a bit of a break from the ‘daily grind’ and have had a chance to spend some time over the school holidays with my granddaughter.    Not that it was any easier than the daily grind, just different!     6 year olds can be very energetic and keeping her amused for up to 10 hours a day taxes one somewhat.

Consequently the Wing has sat in the garage gathering dust and cobwebs for most of the month.  Not a good thing, although I have missed out on dragging myself out in the wee small hours and braving the low temperatures and cool winds along the Warrego.

Brent

A farm boy accidentally overturned his wagonload of chicken manure on the road.  A friend and farmer who lived nearby came to investigate.  "Hey, Willis," he called out, "forget your troubles for a while and come and have hearty dinner and some wine with us.  Then I'll help you overturn the wagon."

"That's very nice of you," Willis answered, "but I don't think Dad would like me to."

"Aw, come on, son!" the farmer insisted. After a little persuasion, Willis the farm boy decided, yes, he would eat.  "Well, OK," the boy finally agreed, "but Dad won't like it."

After a hearty dinner of roast lamb with all the trimmings, Willis thanked the host.  "I feel a lot better now, but I know Dad's going to be real upset."  "Don't be silly!" said the neighbour.  "By the way, where is he?"  "Under the wagon," replied Willis."

From the President

Logos, why does anyone have one?  They provide immediate recognition of something.  The logo is instantly recognisable and rarely changes.  When it does change, it is often just a style change where it is felt that the logo needs to represent a more modern image.  For example Holden updated their Lion a few years ago.  Ford however still utilise their original oval badge, known across the world by its shape and colour.  McDonald’s are known by the yellow M.  Always yellow and when on a background, the background is always red.  Would McDonald’s be so successful if every store was allowed to use whatever colour it wanted to or whatever service standard and menu they wanted to?  I don’t think so.

While our group may not be as big as McDonald’s or Ford, and while our logo may not be a registered trade mark, it still carries the pride of our Association.  The logo was decided at a club meeting to be a grey 1500 Wing with maroon printing on a shirt that would be blue chambray or blue denim.  The style and accepted shape of the logo is seen on our club shirt and on the cover of our magazine.  Where the logo was required as a patch for a cap, vest etc, it was decided that that patch would be the same shape on a similar blue background.

By becoming a member of a club, you consciously agree to the background and beliefs of the club and by joining, you agree to participate under those conditions.  This is not to say that things cannot be changed, but until they are, all members should respect the accepted background and beliefs.  There have recently been cases where changes have been made to the colours of the logo in some situations.  While it may be nice to have the logo in the colour of your own bike and have the lettering in a different colour to compensate for background, this is not in the spirit of the earlier club decision and accepted logo.  What about our associate members?  Do we allow them to replace the Goldwing in the logo with their particular bike in its own colour?

Our meeting the other night accepted variations of size for the logo to enlarge it as back patch, but to retain the distinctive shape.  There was very little support for the idea of multiple colours.  I ask everyone to respect the members decisions and respect the agreed colours and shape of the logo and to not misrepresent the Association.

My fear is that if members use the logo for their personal needs rather than its designed use of club promotion, then there is potential to create significant disharmony within the group.

Keep the shiny side up.

Bevan

Goovigen Duck

Northern Splinter Group Road Report

A big hello to everyone down south. The weather isn’t too bad at the moment a bit fresh but it’s better then the dry heat.

This months ride was organized by Bob Gatehouse and what a ride.  We had a great trip with the Rockhampton Ulysses all great to ride with and lovely to see so many lady riders.

Dale and I started out from Goovigen and headed up to Dululu to meet up with Bob at 9:30. It was then on to Wowan where we waited for the rest of the riding party to arrive. One after the other arrived 37 bikes in all. We where only expecting a couple but the turn out was overwhelming. It was great to meet Brain and Christine Tanner who where on their 1996 Goldwing 1500 trike and what magnificent bike  the “Blue Moon” is.

Peter Goodsir brought Del along with her ankle in cast. Hope she is better soon and back on her bike.  Snoopy (Doug Adams) from Harvey Bay  joined us as well on his Honda 1800 cruiser “The Beast” very nice looking bike.

From Wowan it was on to Goovigen. And as we all know Dale hates leading when there is only two or three bikes, so when he was TOLD to lead 36 bikes he was just overjoyed !!  He only agreed  on the condition that we stop and get a photo in Goovigen and show the kids the bikes.

With a unanimous vote of yes we set out on the road for lunch.   And after the quick stop in Goovigen we headed onto to Jambin where we over took the Hotel.

Mark McDonald and the pub staff put on a great lunch  which is always terrific. With great company around us we all got to meet some great people and talk bikes.  After lunch we all headed back towards Rockhampton. Most of us stopped at Dululu and after a few farewells and see you on the next ride it was time Dale and I headed home.  We had a great day and Bob needs to be congratulated on a great ride. Next ride is planned for sometime next month somewhere we don’t know, but wherever it will it will be worth the tank of fuel we used.

The final Goovigen Duck has been drafted and he looks just like Max our group's mascot.

Tracey’s Story

Dale Warry would like you all to meet a new mate of his who he meet after buying some Goldwing parts from the states. Tracey and his wife Kat are great people who love to talk about bikes as much as Dale and Jack do, especially the old bikes. He has seen photos of all our bikes and Dale has started sending individual photos as well. Tracey is also going to have a look Clint’s web site so make sure you smile for that next bike photo as it will be viewed in Albuquerque USA. Tracey has sent a little bit about himself, for our magazine. Hope you enjoy his story.

Hi there!

Our GL1200 LTD was a project that took me a year to complete.  Bought it in California, it had sat in an open barn for three years uncovered so it was a real mess.  Flew out there paid for it and used an on line friends GWRRA member’s garage for a week getting it mechanically ready for the trip back to Albuquerque and rode it home, about 1500 miles.  Once here I had to replace or repair most all of it, top to bottom.  Not sure I would do it again but did learn lots about the bike in the process.  Kat an Me were married ON the wing on April Fools' Day this year..04 01-02..  At a drive thru wedding chapel in Las Vegas, NV.  After the wedding we rode up "the strip" tossing out strands of cheap beads to the tourists with our newly installed air horns blasting away..  A real fun time.

I'm 54 years old got my first bike at 15 and delivered newspapers off of it... a cushman motorcycle.  Have had a bike of some sort ever since.. dirt and street.  My first Wing was a 1980 GL1100..  Funny but I had it a couple of years (the gl1100) and then saw a 85 LTD in the Wing World mag one day and thought to myself..  WOW what a good looking bike.

About a month later emailing an on line pal, I mentioned that bike to him and he says I know where one is that's for sale around here. (California) he put me in touch with the owner ..  After a few more emails a phone call or two and a PIC or two I cut a deal on price ... now to try to raise the cash Ummmm ..  The next day while at work a guy comes in to my work and says, "hey that 1100 out front.. is it for sale?” I tell him.. Well, as a matter of fact it is. He asks me how much? Well the LTD was 3,500 and I had 800 cash in the bank to spend so just said 2,800.00 he says okay I take it. no ride it or nothing.. says I be right back he comes back in half an hour with the cash. all happened fast.. sorta like my first wing.. the 80 1100 .. saw it in the bike shop price was 1,800 I fell in luv with it at first sight.. Rode it and thought gotta have it.. My wannas for the 1100 running wild ...I was riding a Honda CM 400 at the time.

That night went to a local Indian casino and hit a 800.00 jackpot on a nickel machine.. ummmm.. I thought now I had 800 of the 1800 and 500 in the bank so put a for sale sign on the CM 400 ..15 min later a guy walks in and says hey I like that bike how much.. :) . yep, 500 I say.. he leaves and comes back with the 500.. the bike shop that had the 1100 was just across the street from where I worked so I waltzed over there and bought it.  A winger was born!!

Kat and me ride about 15k miles a year on our wing..  trips to Colorado and around a four state area, weekend trips of 100 to 200 miles pretty regularly.  I'm a full time self employed Internet sales man. mostly Goldwing parts and accessories have two nick names.. Smokey.. From when my LTD caught fire in front of the shop one day (previous owner wired the cigarette lighter straight to the battery.. No fuse no nothing... idiot!)  Not a bad nick name but I don't recommend the method of obtaining it. The other is "mouse potato," you've heard of couch potato (addicted to television) well I'm on the computer lots, so .. Mouse Potato..
Will go check out the wing riders website ya sent me and get back to ya.. Time for the wife's list of honey dos today..:)
Smokey..

Maleny on a Hot June Day

We’d had perfect weather the week before on a final run through the route, but it was a bit threatening on this morning.

Oh well, it is Winter so on with our warmest outfits and pack the wets.  It’s our run so at least we have to be there.

A few of us southsiders met at the Gateway Bridge and had a pleasant ride up the highway to BP Caboolture.

Fuel up and in for coffee.  There to greet us were Larry and Annette, but without bike.  It seems the alternator had died on another trip, but that’s another story.

Bang on time we all got away, Larry and Annette waving a tearful goodbye.

Our group consisted of 5 Goldwings, one Kawasaki Vulcan, a Yamaha 1400 and a BMW K1200LT.

The idea was to travel as far as Eumundi without using the Bruce Highway, then return via the ridge tops.

Through Caboolture we were a bit slow through the usual Sunday Market traffic, then off we went, via Elimbah, Beerburrum, Beerwah to Landsborough via the old highway, then over a nice twisty bit with off-camber corners to Mooloolah.  Through Eudlo, Palmwoods and Woombye (where we were able to wave at Paul and Sue on the BMW at the back of the line).  We were soon through Nambour and on to Yandina for morning tea.

Everyone had kept up well and we didn’t lose a single bike through all the changes of direction.

One little problem is you sure can’t please everyone.  Although no one made definite complaints, one person mentioned we were traveling a bit too fast and another that we were going to slow!!!  As no one else mentioned speed, I figured I’d averaged well.

Sadly, Danielle, the passenger on the Kawasaki with Peter, was suffering motion sickness and so they left us and made their way home.

Leading this time, Charleen and I were unable to take any photos of the riding, so we gave the camera to Mary with detailed instructions on how to use it.  Naturally, it wasn’t easy for her and the road didn’t allow too much side by side riding, but she got a few good shots over Lionel’s shoulder.

Seven bikes headed on up to Eumundi where we crossed the highway twice and turn west toward Kenilworth.  It’s a good ride through here and the weather was staying nice and warm, in fact turning out to be the hottest recorded June day since 1918.  Luckily we were heading up into the hills.

After Kenilworth the road goes over a hill, with the road up being a lovely series of 40kph bends on new smooth bitumen.  Crank her over and clip the apexes and it’s a great feeling.  Over the other side of the hill the road quickly changes to narrow and potholed, with gravel pulled onto the road on the corners.  The riding style changes dramatically.

Then it was through Conondale and up a nice smooth series of bends to the top of the Range.

We arrived for an early lunch at Maleny and all struggled out of our warm gear and raided the Red Dingo Café for burgers, pizza and nachos.  Yum.

We spent a full hour and a half in Maleny, checking out the shops and markets and nervously watching rain clouds build up in the west.

Off again towards one of my favourite pieces of road, towards Woodford, where the last of the ridge tops is a series of 70kph corners that can easily be taken at the speed limit, then some fast twisties down the western side of the range.  Alas, it was not to be as the rain came driving in from the west slowing us considerably until we were nearly down on the flat.

It was dry down here, so I gave Lucille her head and left the group behind for a little while along the long straight open way to Woodford.  Then it was a gentle cruise through Woodford, D’Aguilar and Wamuran back to Caboolture and finishing at the Southbound BP for more coffee.

It wasn’t a really long ride, only 250km, but as it was close to the shortest day of the year, everyone was happy to be finished early.

Clint

Social Night – Pot Luck

Lionel and I want to thank all fifteen of you who came to our Potluck Dinner night. The food was delicious as usual and more than enough. Thank you for all your contributions. Thanks also for your good company. It was a great night and this has to be the big advantage of being a small group- the fact we can all get together in someone's house and not have to go to a public venue to accommodate everyone. I hope that doesn't sound like I don't want our Club to grow, I'm just enjoying it while it is the size it is- like one big happy family.  Thanks again everyone.                                   Mary

IMPORTANT: EVEN IF YOU HAVEN’T FINALISED THE DETAILS OF YOUR RIDE, JUST SUPPLY THE START LOCATION & TIME, THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE RIDE, AND THE MEAL ARRANGEMENTS.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

It is the personal responsibility of each motorcyclist to be responsible for at least the following:

Ø       The roadworthiness of their vehicle, (including trailer)

Ø       That they are in a fit condition to control the vehicle, (including trailer)

Ø       That they obey the traffic rules and ride in a safe manner

Ø       That they ride in a considerate manner that does not endanger, or unnecessarily inconvenience other road users

Ø       To be correctly attired for safe motorcycling

**HINT

Tyre pressures have a dramatic impact on both our safety and our wallets. Incorrectly inflated tyres will change the handling characteristics of your motorcycle. This will cause them to wear unevenly, which will prevent them from behaving the way the designer intended. It will also cause them to wear faster. It pays to regularly check your tyre pressures.
