A man walking down the street noticed a small boy trying to reach the doorbell of a house. Even when he jumped up, he couldn't quite reach it.

The man decided to help the boy, walked up on to the porch and pushed the doorbell. He looked down at the boy, smiled and asked, "What now?"

The boy answered, "Now we run like crazy!"

The President Speaks….

The Secretary’s Desk….

Gidday all,

As has become the case with my reports to the general and committee meetings in which I invariably say that the magazine is late again due to lack of content then beg for member’s articles or ride reports, the usual again occurred at the November committee meeting.

This time though, the reaction was different.  One committee member suggested that maybe the magazine should be wound up and a new format of publishing any information on the web be developed.  Needless to say, while the idea has merit, many voices spoke up to say that if there was no printable magazine and only web content, then they would never see the articles they thought they would also be speaking for a large percentage of our membership.  Are they? This is the question.

To fill one of the usual holes, I’ll write something somewhere in the contents of this edition that I hope you read and that I hope provokes some thoughts in your mind, especially thoughts on the future of the mag or that you might become a contributor.  The issue is bound to be discussed at the next meeting.

Keep the shiny side up and the black bits on the bitumen.

Bevan

Hi all,

For those that weren’t at the meeting this month, it was dominated largely by the recent trip to Japan. Those that went can’t stop talking about it, and those that didn’t go, and are around us that did, never want to hear about it again.

Mary and I have not experienced international travel to the extent that many of you have, so this was a special trip for us. Prior to this trip I had been to the Philippines twice, Mary has been to Fiji, and we both have been to New Zealand. Our daughter has travelled more than us.

To go to a different culture where we didn’t speak the language, couldn’t read the signs, and had no concept of the massive size of Tokyo and surrounds was very daunting, but also very exciting. The fact that we were able to do it with a group of friends, (and our daughter), which increased the fun and hilarity 100 fold was one experience that we did not see coming when we joined the AWRA all those years ago. Then add to that, the fact that we met with some like minded Goldwing riders that just rolled out the red carpet for us and made us feel so very welcome was a humbling experience. One of the Japan Gold Wing Club, (JGWC), actually joined the AWRA, so how good is that.

I certainly hope that this is not the last international experience we have with the AWRA. As a matter of fact we have been invited  back to Japan next year to ride around the Suzuka race circuit with the JGWC so if you want to go, give Meady a call. There is also some talk about a trip to the USA in a couple of years so start saving for that possibility.

On the home front the club is motoring along very nicely and new members are joining up virtually every month. The finances are looking healthy and the Ride Coordinator is dong a great job with many great rides on the calendar. There is sill room for yours so don’t wait, put your name down with Clint.

I hate to end this on a sad note, but two more motorcyclists lost their lives recently in SEQ and the papers and airwaves have been full of negative comments about motorcycles and their riders. It just reminds us all to remain vigilant, ride to the conditions, and get home safely.

Keep it up.

Bill Carter

Hello everyone,

Quite a hectic month, now we are getting into the festive season.   We have 16 units booked at the Bribie Island Waterways Motel, so we are looking forward to a very enjoyable weekend.  Please remember your Secret Santa (boy/girl) gift, to the value of $10.00.  In the meantime we are looking forward to the ride to Mitchell and meeting up with the “Emerald Kids – Mike & Marie”.

Ray is panicking on how he is going to get our wing washed and sparkling for the trip.

I am busy wrapping up parcels, especially the ones we have to send up to Townsville – I love Christmas time.  It really is the time for good cheer and catch up with family and friends.

Our wing calendar looks busy too which is excellent.  Following the Lovell’s USA trip – Thommo and I just loved their new jackets they had bought over there, so ‘we’ (meaning Thommo) actually did our first overseas transaction and we are now the proud owners of our new Honda summer jackets.  They look great, they are our Christmas presents to each other, but we have the advantage of using them before Christmas, so they will get their first ride to Mitchell.  Yippee.

In the meantime, ride carefully – the drivers seem exceptionally silly at this time of year.  Hope to see you soon.

Ride Safely.

Valerie & Thommo

Our Ride

Arriving at BP Staplyton about 8.30am. and only two Wings in the car park.  Oh well wasn’t expecting many with the Japan Trip next week anyway.

Went inside and almost everybody that was coming was there.  Everybody was early and parked out the back.

9.00am, lets go.  A brilliant pre-ride speech (even if I do say so myself).  Met up with all the others out the back on the way out.  John on white wing just fuelling up, no pillion.  9 bikes all up. Not a bad turn out.

Away we went, straight down the Gold Coast Highway past Bill and Mary’s turn off.(sorry about that) and out through Nerang up the winding mountain roads to Beachmont. Always very good scenery up there.  Top of the world I say.  Down the other side to Sharp Park for a pit stop and smoko.  A very nice spot if you’re into camping.

After a short break we’re off again up through Canungra, turn left and head towards Beaudesert.

On the way, one of our members had something come off their bike so another one of members turned around and picked it up for them.( We are such nice people aren’t we) I didn’t get the whole story)  A nice ride with a couple of 40km corners one after the other. They kind of sneak up on you, but we managed nicely.

We arrive at Flavours Café in Boonah on time, a great place to eat.   Bear and Jane also met us there for lunch.  After some very good food and good old chit chat Clinton’s heads and tails way of drawing the raffle was a bit of fun in the car park.  Bear won 1st and second to Valerie.

From there some went their own way. Five of us headed back to Beaudesert for a coffee, pig fat and farewells at Macca’s.  Bill and Mary headed to the coast while the rest of us headed for Brisbane turning off to our respective destinations. I thought it was a very compact, controlled ride with good food, good company and very good riding. Thank you all for your company.

Take it easy

Larry

(Ride pictures on the next two pages)

Nice ride, nothing exciting.  Turning left at Beaudesert we headed out towards Kerry. Narrow roads not too rough with a few messy cattle crossings. (This is cattle country at it best)  Eric would have loved it. On we go out past Darlington Park. Another nice spot for campers.

After a few k’s we throw a right and head for Hill View.  Up on the narrowest little winding bit of road you have seen.  Got to the top with no time for sightseeing, sharp left turn and down the steepest road we have been on for some time, extracting ooh’s and aah’s and comments from riders and pillions alike. Down through Hill View, we throw a right and head for Laravale.

Turning left at Laravale we headed down the Mt Lindsay Highway for Rathdowney, stopping here for a strictly non social Pitt stop. (Getting old you know). Off again turning right and heading off towards Boonah.

A lawyer died and arrived at the pearly gates. To his dismay, there were thousands of people ahead of him in line to see St. Peter. To his surprise, St. Peter left his desk at the gate and came down the long line to where the lawyer was, and greeted him warmly. Then St. Peter and one of his assistants took the lawyer by the hands and guided him up to the front of the line, and into a comfortable chair by his desk. The lawyer said, "I don't mind all this attention, but what makes me so special?" St. Peter replied, "Well, I've added up all the hours for which you billed your clients, and by my calculation you must be about 193 years old!"

AWRA Christmas Party

Don’t forget the Christmas Party week-end of 30 November and the dinner on the night of 1 December.

It’s getting closer so make sure you have booked accommodation at the Waterways Motel, Bribie Island.

Also, don’t forget your Secret Santa gift.  You know the rules. Buy something to the value of $10 for someone the same sex as yourself, wrap it up and bring it along for putting in the Santa sack

Who knows, you may even pick your own back

A flight attendant was stationed at the departure gate to check tickets. As a man approached, she extended her hand for the ticket and he opened his trench coat and flashed her. Without missing a beat....she said, "Sir, I need to see your ticket not your stub."

A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but she couldn't find one big enough for her family.  She asked a stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?"
The stock boy replied, "No ma'am, they're dead

Let’s talk about the magazine

Wing Notes is the AWRA’s primary communication tool.  It lets members keep in touch with what is happening even if they can’t attend rides or meetings.  This is important for those members not resident in SE Queensland.  Wing Notes is also the medium allowing those non-SE Queensland members to communicate their activities to those in SEQ.

*          None of this communication can occur if members do not submit articles

The magazine is produced by the Communications Officer from articles received.  It can take up to a day to format, fill in the gaps, add some editorial notes etc.  It takes longer when there are no articles as page fillers have to be found or written by the Communications Officer.

*          Should the magazine be full of jokes, funny pictures, non-member related articles etc, or is it for member related news?

Ride co-ordinators are requested to write and submit an article after their ride.      …..(cont page 15)

Recovery

Here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies.

FACTS

1 Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Aussies, British or Americans.

2 Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Aussies, British or Americans.

3 Africans drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Aussies, British or Americans.

4 Italians drink large amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Aussies, British or Americans.

5 Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Aussies, British or Americans.

CONCLUSION

Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is what kills you.

Health Question & Answer Session:

Q:I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?

A:Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q:Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q:Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q:How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q:What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q:Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q:Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q:Is chocolate bad for me?

A:Are you crazy? HELLO ...... Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q:Is swimming good for your figure?

A:If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q:Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

Bear’s Necessities…..

Let’s talk about the magazine…cont

How important is oil?  That’s a silly question isn’t it? We all know oil is important but it is easy to overlook an oil change or service. It only takes a few minutes to check the oil level and condition.  If the oil is black, get it changed soon, as well as a filter.  This small job can save lots of money and realistically, oil is cheap when compared to an engine overhaul (bikes and cars alike).

Subject 1 -

Over the last few years some ‘Wing riders have called me and asked if I have ever replaced a clutch in a ‘Wing?’

First question I ask ‘Why do you need a replacement clutch?’

The reply - ‘It’s slipping badly.’

Next Q - ‘Have you changed the oil recently?

Most common next answer - ‘Yes.’

Q - ‘What oil did you use?

A - ‘Oh something from the servo.... Something had to go in.’

R - ‘Yes, it’s better to run on something rather than nothing however, it’s possible you have put in oil of the incorrect viscosity.’

The job will now have to be done all over again. See your bike manual or ask at the bike shop for the recommended oil.  We use Penrite HPRGas 10.  It has all the right stuff and works well.

So, run the engine and make sure it is up to operating temperature.  Stop the engine and drain the oil and replace the filter. REMEMBER the oil will probably be very hot, so keep your hands away from the draining oil.

Subject 2 - Additives -

In our workshop we find Wynns products to be very good and reliable additives.  They are used in cars and trucks; also we have found these products work very well in all our bikes and farm machinery.  The most common product for the oil we use is ‘friction proof’. The big question people have asked is ’What about the wet clutch in the ’Wing; will it slip? The answer is ‘No, it is only for engine protection against wear.’

‘Injector clean’ - is also good for carburetted models. It helps in cleaning water and scum build up in the tank, lines, carbys or injectors.  It basically dissipates foreign matter and burns it through so your next tank full should burn fuel much cleaner.

We like to carry on board a small bottle of ‘Radiator Stop Leak’ just in case our ‘Wing comes in contact with a nasty stone in the radiator or we have a coolant weep anywhere.  The reason we use this brand is the product is made up of microscopic nylon pieces and can be flushed out again when repairs are made to the cooling system. PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY STOP LEAK IS A TEMPORARY FIX TO GET YOU HOME.

Take care out there.

Bear

This means that if you are the ride coordinator, you could take a camera and write up the ride shortly after you get home.  It does not mean someone else cannot write a story from their own perspective and it would be good if they did.

*          It is not the responsibility of, nor should it be expected of, the Comms Officer to be on every ride and write the story.

At meetings, there is always a reminder that articles are required and that new members should submit a profile so other members get to know them.

*          Is it fair that the Comms Officer begs for articles every meeting?

There has been a suggestion that we create a new electronic magazine from a news page on the website.  This would take a form that would still allow us to provide support for our sponsors.

*          Would a more regular electronic newsletter be acceptable to members?

I’m in my third term as Comms Officer.  One thing I have observed is the sustained limited support for Wing Notes.  Sure, the same old contributors continue to participate, (a bit like our ride co-ordination I suppose), and some people even ask after it at times, but there has been almost no feedback on Wing Notes, either positive or negative.

*          Is Wing Notes in its current form meeting member needs or should it be changed?

Comments would be appreciated to mail@auswingriders.com
