The President Speaks….

The Secretary’s Desk….

G’day everyone

Thanks to all those who have contributed to the magazine this month.  It’s good to get some variety, not necessarily directly related to motorcycling and just as good to get more that one contribution on the same event.  While we ask that the organiser of an event write a story for those who could not be present, it is an additional bonus to get a story from someone who participated, as every one sees and experiences something different on each ride.

All the best to Lionel and Mary as they head off on their round the world jaunt.  I know they are looking forward to their holiday and it is bad luck that they will run into the current problems with trans-Atlantic flights.

Today’s Sunday paper brings the news of a proposal to prohibit potential motorcyclists from holding a learner’s permit until they have had a car licence for 12 months.  This may appear to provide some road trauma benefits but would appear to again be part of the building attack on motorcyclists.  In this time of high fuel prices and dwindling fuel supplies, surely part of what we should be doing is encouraging the use of fuel efficient transport and scooters surely fit that bill.  I have always believed that drivers who have motorcycling experience become far better and more aware drivers.  Something to do with not always living in a steel cacoon where it doesn’t really matter if you hit something as you are still relatively safe from injury.

Instead, here we are further encouraging the use of older less efficient, more expensive and more polluting vehicles instead on encouraging young riders onto scooters which reduce traffic and parking volumes and conjestion.

‘Till next month,

Happy reading.

Bevan

Hi all,

The truck delivery game has been quite busy recently and so Charleen and I have been unable to get to some AWRA events.  But we try.

Last weekend we actually got a Sunday to ourselves and decided to go for a ride.  Just by ourselves.  Just like when we first got our first GoldWing.  Before we got involved in clubs.

We decided on a run up Mt Glorious, being fully aware that on a Sunday one needs to take great care.

Well, the ride was excellent, the day was a beautiful, typically Qld winter day.  We went up from The Gap over the excellently surfaced road to Mt Nebo.  Stopped at Jolly’s to overlook Highvale where I was born.  Then on to Glorious for the almost regulatory coffee at Maiala Teahouse.  What a great gathering of diverse two-wheeled machinery and riders.  There was even another Wing there, but he got away before I could single out the rider from the throng.  We supped and chatted with other riders – all strangers – all friends.

Down the western side and it is good to see a re-surface job and new “biker-friendly” Armco on many corners.

We did the ride at our own pace without a problem.  We did not see any police presence but that wasn’t the biggest surprise of the day.  On four occasions over the mountain we caught up to four wheeled contraptions.  We sat at a reasonable distance behind, but all four times the cars pulled over, when convenient, to let us through.

Some days are diamonds.

Cheers

Clint

Hello everyone,

Happy Birthday to all the Leo’s.  We have three of them, and they are great people.  Meanwhile, I am continuing to exercise and mend and I have taken up my duties fully with special thanks to dear Charleen for being your Secretary over the past few weeks.  You will also be pleased to know that Thommo has been relieved of his domestic duties, and is back giving instructions and his full attention to his bookwork!  Our bike has been cleaned and polished, and we just have a few minor repairs to do, including a loose panel – not bad at all.

Our latest meeting venue is at Edinburgh Hotel, Kedron and it will be interesting to hear the response from our members on this one.

Welcome back to Doug and Preeta back into the Queensland fold, now they can get back to some serious/sunny riding.

We also will be helping celebrate with Mary Carter turning the big 50 – now she is officially old.

Thommo and I are off to the Ekka this Sunday – it has been quite a few years since our last trip and I am really looking forward to it.  I make the special effort to go and see our farmers and thank them for being there – what would we do without them!

We hope to be on the ride to the Bunya Mountains, so see you all soon and safe riding of course.

Safe riding everyone.

July Social at Larry and Annette’s

Wow, what a night. Great food, great company and a jolly good night was had by all.

Larry and Annette kindly offered their home for the July Social and they turned on a cracker.

The weather forecast was not good so I made the magnanimous gesture to take the car instead of Evie, (the prettiest wing in the club), and protect my beautiful wife from the impending inclement weather.

We arrived fashionably late to find the party in full swing. I don’t know what the neighbours, thought with all of the bikes and cars, (yes we weren’t the only members of the Wing Owners Club, (as opposed to the Wing Riders Assn)), that were blocking the street. Anyway, once the traffic controllers and security people arrived things were more organised.

It was obvious that Annette had been very busy, as the house renovations had taken a huge leap forward since the last time we were there. She must have coordinated the laying of 500 metres of concrete in the front of the house and the new car and bike accommodation is really taking shape, not to mention the new entry to the house. You’ve got to hand it to Annette she can really get Larry motivated.

Rather than make it a Pot Luck, or Dial-a-Pizza night, Annette offered to cater the whole banquet, and boy did she do a great job. There was two types of soup, roast pork, baked ham, chicken, lasagne, salad, roast vegies, steamed vegies, sticky date pudding, apple and rhubarb crumble, huge strawberries, (we had to fillet them with a chain saw), whipped cream and custard.

There was enough food to feed Tasmania, and a whole new standard was set in Wingriders social

police on the way home for being overloaded, (and there was only two people in the car).

It just reinforces an observation that was made by one club member a few years ago that we are one of the gutsiest motorcycle clubs on the road. A fact that Honda obviously recognised when they raised the capacity of the Wings to 1800cc. Bring on the V8 I say.

After dinner there was much frivolity and story telling and I was surprised at some of the information that was passed on. I have a whole new respect for some of our members and had no idea that a Wing was so fast, let alone that anyone would be game enough to ride them as far and as fast as some of the stories related. I guess Valentino must have been a bit miffed as I heard that he took an 1800 down to the Island to see if he could match the times.

The party started to take a different turn with some members showing us the more unusual and intimate places that body piercing can be done. What imagination, (and courage), some people have. I won’t mention names here, but thanks to the couple for that information on how to spice things up at home, and where to get those gadgets. They are working great.

Anyway, it was getting a bit much for us so we decided to go home early before I got embarrassed. If anyone is missing a red G String just let me know as I wore it home by mistake. If anyone wants to take advantage of group purchasing, Larry will be placing the club Viagara and fluid tablet order next week.

I can’t wait for the next social at the Fishers.

Bill

P.S. Larry, did you manage to find the chocolate dipping sauce that Annette had in the bedroom?

events. There was only one teensy complaint, and that was that Larry ate all the crackling from the roast pork.

As we had a quorum an extraordinary meeting was convened and it was unanimously agreed that Annette will be the Club Social Quality Control Coordinator, and Catering Trainer. Well done Annette. When it came time to leave there was a bit of air added to the rear shocks of the bikes, and I heard that at least one car was pulled over by the

Ride to Kin Kin

With a forecast for a rainy day and having had rain through the night, I didn’t expect a big turnout for our ride. It was a great lift to see four wings already parked when we arrived at Nudgee. Rob and his daughter Camilla arrived and then Bevan and Therese and we were off.

Only a couple of k’s down the highway and the sun came out and shone beautifully, what a buzz. Sadly it didn’t stay out for too long but no real rain before morning tea at Palmwoods. We had taken the old highway north and continued on this to Cooroy.  We had come to an

agreement to check out this small town which has been trying to attract the tourist trade with some street sculptures. We found a massive seat for a group photo. It was made from giant slabs of timber and incorporated old timber cutter’s tools.  There were other interesting sculptures as well. On the wings and off again, crossing the highway near Eumundi and traversing the range down into Pomona and on through lots of curves and corners to Kin Kin. It was not a long wait till lunch was served, great value meals.  Then IT POURED. We waited till the rain stopped and retraced our route to

Pomona, almost, and turned off to Cooran and out onto the Bruce Highway.

With the small number of wings it had been easy to keep everyone together all day, but on the way home, Rob needed a fuel stop before most of the others. This meant he slowed down to conserve fuel and the group separated, sadly. Ten of us had coffee at BP South and departed for home, happy to have had another good day out with our Wing friends.

FISHERS   FEAST

Saturday 22nd July 2006

Our wings social night is here, and although our ‘wing’ will be parked we will be able to enjoy our friends company tonight.  Instructions from Thommo – do you have the address, what are you taking to drink, do you have the camera, where’s my jumper?

Well, bottle of wine is in the cooler, 6 bottles of Light Beer in the small esky, camera is in my bag, jumper is on the backseat and the refidex with address is

planted on my lap - we are ready to go.  Navigation went extremely smoothly and we made it door to door without a u-turn, although I must admit to the obligatory turning of the map in the direction we are going (but I believe I am not the only culprit to do this, blonde or not!)

We have arrived at the Fisher residence, even noticed our wing flag fluttering at the gate – nice touch, but that was only the beginning to what was a terrific evening.  We pull into the driveway just as we see a wing turning off into the other direction, Oh well – they’ll be back!  Bear & Jayne’s wing is parked, and we pull in front of a silver car, and pleased to see Gecko & Kay and Rusty and Maree are there.  Big hugs for our hosts Larry and Annette and the errant wing arrives – Meady.  Smartly followed by Bevan and Therese then Bill & Mary Carter and it seems we are all present and correct.

First comment must be made on the elegant and delightful setting Annette had made for our meal – it was absolutely beautiful and the camera was used straight away.  I am truly amazed and impressed at this girl’s talent.  Everyone was commenting on the tantalizing aromas, but I was still busy with crackers and dip. Then Thommo spied the macadamia nuts, and Larry demonstrated a very clever gadget that cracked them perfectly – needless to say Thommo was cracking his nuts all night with great relish!  Socialising is now interrupted with the call to eat, and so began a sumptious three course meal that would put the top resort restaurants to shame.  So for all you peasants

who missed out, this is how we dined!

Entrée   Pumpkin Soup – and/or – Pea and Ham soup

Main     Roast Pork (with crispy crackling)/ Baked Ham/Roast Chicken

accompanied with heaps of steamed vegetables, garlic potato bake, Vegetable lasagne, and tomato/avocado salad.

Dessert Sticky Date Pudding/ Rhubarb Crumble/ Huge fresh, local strawberries with custard and/or whipped cream.

Bottomless Tea and coffee – chocolates/mints.

It has to be mentioned that despite Larry’s desperate attempt to guard the crackling, it still disappeared with the help of Mary C!

As you can appreciate, we all sank in our chairs very full and content, and we were duly entertained by our resident wing jokers, and some rather dubious stories that made Meady blush on more than one occasion.  The evening was thoroughly relaxed, and good company of course, and we reluctantly started to say goodnight at around 10.30pm.

What a wonderful evening, and how many thanks and hugs can I say to our splendid hosts Larry and Annette.  It was an excellent venue, and the food was ‘to die for’ and we even walked away and left all the clearing-up to you.  I still feel rather guilty at

doing that, but I really needed to get home and sleep on such a full stomach!

A great night, great company, great food and thank you millions Larry & Annette.

Luv-n-hugs

MEETINGS SHOULD BE FUN!!!!!

Everyone who attends a meeting such as ours for A.W.R.A. should be able to go home saying that was an enjoyable experience----business was discussed, opinions shared and friendships renewed. Let’s work towards that. It will only happen if people can hear and everyone remembers the golden rule. See you all mid- October after the trip and happy riding till then.

Mary

Obeying the signs?

Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 kph. He says to himself, "this driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!"

So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies - two in the front seats and three in the back - wide eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him "Officer, I don't understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?"

"Ma'am," the officer replies, "you weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers."

"Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly..22 kilometres an hour!" the woman says a bit proudly.

The Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that 22 was the highway number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error.

"But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask... Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken and they haven't made a peep this whole time," the officer asks.

"Oh, they'll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Highway 189."

Bear’s Necessities…..

Jayne’s trivia

Hi everyone!

Hi Everyone! This month I thought we would look at some safety precautions for those who like to do some home maintenance and repairs on their pride and joy....(‘Wing of course!) It is easy to forget (or think they are not necessary) the simple things.

·        Firstly remember to read the instructions and have all the correct tools before you begin.

·        Protect your eyes by using proper safety glasses, goggles or a face shield

·        Use other protective wear such as gloves - for handling hot or sharp parts.  Safety boots/shoes to protect feet from sharps or hot items left lying around

·        Ventilation - reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning from the engine’s exhaust by working in a well ventilated area.

·        Burns can be from hot parts, oil or coolant.  Let the engine cool down sufficiently to reduce the risk.

·        Clothing can easily be caught up in moving parts in an engine, try to wear something close fitting.

·        Vapours from fuel and batteries can be explosive. Reduce the risk by using non-flammable solvents for cleaning parts and areas. Never store or drain fuel into an open container. No smoking in the area by yourself or on lookers while you are working.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of reminders, and nothing can replace common sense with safety as well.  Hopefully this little reminder will help keep you safe.

Remember if you are not confident don’t do it.

Our holiday plans

Woke up one morning lately thinking of our trip and composed these few lines……………Mary J

We’ve bought our tickets for around the world,

What I’ve wanted to do since I was a girl.

First to Hawaii where the big waves roll,

Might see a volcano, a sight to behold.

Then off to Vancouver to visit the Isle,

We’ll go by ferry and do it in style.

Next to Dublin, the Guinness to taste,

And tour four days, not a moment to waste

Before going to London – just two nights

Then to Europe to see the sights.

Back to London to see what we can,

Then off touring the countryside once again.

We’ll stop off at Cambridge a cousin to meet

To see him again (after 22 years) will be a treat.

Then back to London for only four days

Before flying to Athens… upon ruins we’ll gaze

Then take a cruise, the Greek islands to see,

Home via Singapore with a short shopping spree.

By 10th October we’ll be home in Briz,

With memories galore and GEE WHIZ,

IF this all happens as we have planned----

We’ll be broke and exhausted…but it will have been grand.

I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area. So I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands. "Now," she asked me, "has your plane arrived yet?".
