The Secretary’s Desk….

G’day everyone

Here is the magazine for another month.  We have stories from our AGM, the Ulysses AGM, and a profile on our new Treasurer and our other favourites have returned also.

Well, the AGM is over for another year.  I have to admit, I found it a little disappointing for a couple of reasons.  One, we missed the Friday night which obviously was a lot of fun.  As it turned out, we could have got there after all as the reason for booking in only for the Saturday disappeared on Friday afternoon.

Another reason I was disappointed was the lack of any organised action for the Saturday and Sunday and I heard similar feedback coming from a number of members.  Being on the committee, I take a share of the blame for that.  As our Association grows and the AGM gets bigger, there will be more and more need for greater effort to be put into the organisation of the event and the days around it.  Next year the committee will need to consider this and look to assembling a program that will provide rides or the like for entertainment.  Sure, individuals will want to do their own thing so not everyone will participate, but the feedback I got and my feelings of something missing suggest there is a need.  Your thoughts on whether this should occur are always appreciated.

On a lighter note, it was great to see our Victorian members up here for the weekend.  It’s great to meet and put faces to names.  I trust that the ride home for each of you was safe and trouble free.

‘Till next month,

Happy reading.

Bevan

Hi all,

Thank you all for a great weekend at Hastings Point.  The venue was excellent, maybe a little on the expensive side, but it did have all the amenities we needed.  Thanks must also go to our sponsors.  They delivered some nice prizes for some happy winners.  John Z, the liqueur is delicious.

The upshot of the prizes is that the contributor is entitled to a year’s half-page advert in this magazine.  So if you see their ad, please consider availing yourself of their services, and tell them you saw the ad.  That way we might get even better prizes next year.

A word of warning to owners of GoldWings with H.I.S.S. ignition systems.  Mine came with only one key and as loss of that one would entail replacing the whole multi-thousand dollar system; we decided to get a second one.  New genuine Honda blank (no other will work) - $57.00 – ouch!  Getting it cut by a good locksmith who won’t stuff up cutting the blank - $16.00 – acceptable. Getting the new key ‘coded’ by the dealer so it will actually start the bike - $180.00 – Aaaagh!!

It seems the flux capacitor pulse generator is buried deep and it takes 10 minutes to do the ‘coding’ but three hours to remove/replace the Tupperware.

Don’t lose your keys folks.  It hurts!

Cheers

Clint

Hello everyone,

Well troops the Annual General Meeting is happening.  Everything is booked, restaurant has been reserved it is just a matter of relaxing and having a good time.  The committee has been busy finalising most details to make the meeting smooth and short for us.

New faces/bikes are joining us which is really exciting – seem to be seeing more wings around now too.

Trust you have finalised your memberships before our A.G.M. so you can make those important votes?

Apologies for delaying our last monthly meeting, Thommo and I spent the long week-end camping in a most delightful 4x4 in Yamba, and of course we encountered plenty of traffic on the highway, road works and the usual bottle-neck at Tugun.  With the trailer we couldn’t do the ‘sneaky’ threading through traffic trick!

Looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces at the A.G.M. and the Victorians too!

Safe riding everyone.

§         Reporter interviewing a 104-year-old woman: "And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?" the reporter asked.  She simply replied, "No peer pressure."

§         Just before the funeral service, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, "How old was your husband?" "98," she replied, "Two years older than me." "So you're 96?" the undertaker commented.  She responded, "Hardly worth going home, is it?

Our Clayton’s Ulysses A.G.M.

Ten years ago, we took just fifteen days to do a trip  to Hobart and back, on the Honda ST, towing a trailer, for the A.G.M. that year. So, being retired for this A.G.M., we decided to take our time and drive down in our Nissan Patrol camper and have a good look at Tasmania. Thus our Clayton’s A.G.M. and although we enjoyed the dinners and socializing with friends at Ulverstone, it just wasn’t the same and Lionel has firmly decided he’s not going to another A.G.M. without a bike.

Our trip took forty-four days this time and I will just give you some of the highlights and very memorable parts.

Tasmania is a wonderful holiday destination, with so much to see and visit all so close together, e.g. on the first day off the ferry we had a lovely breakfast at a bakery, visited caves down Mole Creek Road, saw an echidna in the wild, had an ice cream at the Honey museum, tasted smoked salmon at a salmon farm and climbed a fairly steep path to see the Alum Cliffs---and this was all before lunch. After lunch by the river at Deloraine, we checked out a folk museum and drove down the Lakes Highway to camp near Lake Arthur. This was our coldest night of the trip and we later realized we were in one of the highest parts of Tasmania. No wonder we lit a fire to warm us.

Our eco-tourism boat trip from Bruny Island was one of the best days in Tas. Eco-tourism is where there is little or no impact on the natural surroundings and you are really just viewing the beautiful scenery. The cliffs and rock formations are just fabulous and the owner-operator of the boat had so much to tell you, it was great and luckily the weather was perfect. Bruny Island itself is a magic place, so historic. It was a whaling station but more interestingly, it was a favourite stopping place for both Captain Cook and Captain Bligh. At a little museum there we saw some

of the actual journals of the former, not copies. Cradle Mountain was just beautiful and I loved hearing about how it was so easily declared a World Heritage Wilderness Area. It satisfied 7 out of 10 criteria and many other sites only satisfy a mere one or two. Once again we were luckily to be there on a good day.

Travelling across Tasmania, halfway between Strahan and Hobart, just after Derwent Bridge, we came to” The Wall”. This was a purpose built, new building with an enormous set of carvings from Huon pine inside, forming a two –sided wall. The carvings go from floor to ceiling, 5 metres tall and would be 40 metres in length. I wish I knew the exact dimensions. The carvings tell a story of early Tasmania and are an ongoing work of art. I would love to go back to see the finish, ed project, which will take the artist, Greg Duncan, some years to complete.

The little historical village of Ross would have to have been another favourite spot; even to the tranquil, leafy camping spot we had by the river. The Wool Museum there had an original wool tapestry designed by John Coburn who designed the famous Sydney Opera House tapestries.

There were just so many more highlights of Tas, not a day went by when there wasn’t something of beauty to see or just plain interesting. Forgot to mention Seahorse World at Beauty Point. Fell in love with the leafy sea dragons there.

Meeting up with friends from Ulysses and making new ones was a very important part of our Tas. Trip, but on to Melbourne.

We arrived on St. Patrick’s Day and after setting up camp west of Melbourne we heading back in to the city to find an Irish Pub. Did that and then started to see what Melbourne had in store for us. The atmosphere in Melbourne was fantastic, electric.

You don't have to own a cat to appreciate this one.....

A couple was dressed and ready to go out into the city for the evening.  They turned on a night light, turned the answering machine on the phone line, covered their pet parakeet and put the cat in the backyard. They phoned the local cab company and requested a taxi. The taxi arrived and the couple opened the front door to leave their house. The cat they had put out into the yard scoots back into the house.

They don't want the cat shut in the house because she always tries to eat the bird. The wife goes out to the taxi while the husband goes inside to get the cat. The cat runs upstairs, the man in hot pursuit.

Waiting in the cab, the wife doesn't want the driver to know the house will be empty for the night. She explains to the taxi driver that her husband will be out soon. "He's just going upstairs to say good-bye to my Mother."

A few minutes later, the husband gets into the cab. "Sorry I took so long," he says, as they drive away. "Stupid bitch was hiding under the bed. Had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off so I grabbed her by the neck. Then I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me, but it worked. I hauled her fat ass downstairs and threw her out into the back yard!"

The cab driver hit a parked car......

Big fight…

Walking into the bar, Mike said to Charlie the bartender, "Pour me a stiff one - just had another fight with the little woman."

Oh yeah?" said Charlie "And how did this one end?"

“When it was over," Mike replied, "she came to me on her hands and knees.

"Really," said Charles, "now that's a switch! What did she say?"

She said, "Come out from under the bed, you little chicken."

The Games had just started and also the Festival associated with them. There was literally non-stop entertainment at 5 or 6 venues throughout the city. For those who remember and enjoyed Expo in Brisbane, it was like that only all free and covering about 6 times as big an area. I was in seventh heaven trying to fit in as many shows as we could in the ten days we were there. At the Sydney Myer Music Bowl we saw 3 concerts, the best being one put on by the members of the three armed forces.  It was stirring stuff with real cannon fire for the 1812

overture and great music and singing. We had booked for “The Lion King” and for the closing ceremony of the Games and these were both great experiences.

We left Melbourne to head home via the Strezlecki Track and the highlights before that were” being away from the madding crowds” and seeing Wilpena Pound from the air as well as driving around it. By this time Lionel had been diagnosed with shingles, so we came home as fast as we could after completing the Track, but had to take the extra

night to see The Dig Tree where Bourke and Wills just missed their rescue party. That was on the banks of Cooper Creek and we really loved that spot. It was fascinating to visit those tiny towns of Lyndhurst and Innamincka at either end of the Track.  A memory of the first half of the Strezlecki track that I will always have is the sharpness of the big rocky gravel that was The Track. I had seen so many tyres by the side of the road in the first 100 klms that I counted them for the next 100 klms There were123!!!! So you can imagine why I was sitting with everything crossed, hoping that we

would not have a puncture, despite having a spare and 3 spare tubes. We had only gone 20klms the next morning before it did happen and Lionel had to use the spare.

From The Dig Tree it was all the way across Queensland, about 1900klms to get home in two days.

The three sections of our trip were all so different, it’s hard to say which part was the best, they were all part of a great six and a bit weeks.

WIFE: What would you do if I died? Would you get married again?

HUSBAND: Definitely not!

WIFE: Why not - don't you like being married?

HUSBAND: Of course I do.

WIFE: Then why wouldn't you remarry?

HUSBAND:  Okay, I'd get married again.

WIFE: You would? (with a hurtful look on her face).

HUSBAND: (makes audible groan).

WIFE: Would you live in our house?

HUSBAND: Sure, it's a great house.

WIFE: Would you sleep with her in our bed?

HUSBAND: Where else would we sleep?

WIFE: Would you let her drive my car?

HUSBAND: Probably, it is almost new

WIFE: Would you replace my pictures with hers?

HUSBAND: That would seem like the proper thing to do.

WIFE: Would she use my golf clubs?

HUSBAND: No, she's left-handed.

WIFE: - - silence - -

HUSBAND: Oh ****!

Jayne’s Trivia

Hi everyone!

Just a short story about Tyre Pressures.

We had replaced tyres (to Dunlop Elite II), leaking rear shocks, measuring & testing front shocks and found the Wing rode fairly good but still wasn’t 100% front and rear.  In actual fact it seemed to be getting worse to ride.

At this point all sorts of silly things run through your mind like - have I lost my riding ability? Is the Wing straight? Is it time to trade in? (heaven forbid!!)

Well we thought about it and decided to try one last thing and upped the tyre pressures to 45lbs in the front and 46lbs in the rear.  WELL! what a difference it made to the handling and performance of the Wing.  The Wing now goes ‘round corners like it’s on rails.

The Teale Wing still rides on with no TRADE IN  in mind (YAY!!)- dodging ‘roos, foxes and hares on our late night trips home.

Now, this tyre pressure works for us, but it may not work for you. Don’t be afraid to experiment with them use the recommended pressures as a guide.

We also use a little vigil Michelin tyre gauge which comes in a nice little black box and fits neatly in the pannier.  Most bike shops would have one.

Why carry your own?  Well, we find there can be a lot of variation between servo gauges and at least you know it will be the same constantly.

Because I'm a man

§         Because I'm a man, I think what you're wearing is fine. I thought what you were wearing five minutes ago was fine, too. Either pair of shoes is fine. With the belt or without it, looks fine. Your hair is fine. You look fine.  Can we just go now?

§         Because I'm a man, when I catch a cold, I need someone to bring me soup  and take care of me while I lie in bed and moan. You're a woman. You never get as sick as I do, so for you this isn't a problem.

§         Because I'm a man, I do not want to visit your mother, or have your mother comes visit us, or talk to her when she calls, or think about her any more than I have to. Whatever you got her for Mother's Day is okay; I don't need to see it. And don't forget to pick up something for my mother, too.

§         Because I'm a man, there is no need to ask me what I'm thinking about.  The answer is always sex, cars, or football. I have to make up something else when you ask, so don't ask.

AWRA AGM Weekend

The Resort and the room are booked.  Everybody who is anybody is going.  All in our own time.

A few left early on Friday to make the most of the weekend.  About 12 bikes assembled at BP Staplyton, including three from down South, at 6pm for a nice night ride.

Charleen and I decided to take the two bikes; hopefully we won’t get many opportunities to do that.

It was a beautiful evening.  Not too hot or cold.  Just right for riding.

Down the highway we went, past the Gold Coast and over the Tweed River.  I usually get confused here so I took the first exit to Kingscliff, much to the surprise of a few who knew the right way to go.  That sorted we wound our way through the roundabouts until we were back on the main road then all too soon we were there.

We were greeted by Management of the resort, then much more loudly by several members who were definitely making the most of the weekend.  All into our various abodes, then we met at the BBQ for friendly drinks and chats.  It went well into the night, only stopping when the security man got upset.

Next morning was another wonderful day – clear skies and balmy weather.  Those of us sober enough decided to go for a ride down the coast to Ballina.  Geoff Sheather led the way down and we stopped for coffee at Lennox Head.  Then on past some of the prettiest coastal scenery in the land to Ballina.

Bill took over from there to show us another nice place where he and Mary had recently stayed.  We got plenty of U-turn practice until Bill found his bearings, then a few more cul-de-sac turns while he showed us some very high class real estate.

Back to Byron where a few stopped off to look at the sights.  Charleen and I returned to camp with JohnG JohnB and Steve, stopping for lunch at Billinudgel for a feed of pies.

Preparations were then made for the meeting which got underway around 4pm.  By 5.30 it was all over bar the raffles and we gave out around $500 worth of prizes.  First going to Geoff Meade, second to Phil Wicks then subsequent ones to almost everyone else.  Not quite, but I got a nice bottle of liqueur with a pear inside  and Charleen got a T-shirt.

The night finished off with a banquet dinner which was enjoyed by all.

Next morning, back to the restaurant for brekkie then a few pose photos and people went their own ways from there.  Charleen and I headed for home, enjoying our time riding side by side on the two GoldWings.  Gotta make the good times last.

Thanks to the following sponsors for the prizes:  Pro Honda;  Jeffrey Honda;  Silver Eagle;  Harriss Mechanical;  Old Caves Winery

Profile – Geoff Mead

Treasurer – 2006/07

Born in Tamworth 27th Dec 1972 and in 5 years we moved to Coffs Harbour, after being here for a few years we then moved to Beenleigh. Here my parents began a bus and coach company and still today they operate here, after doing grade 12 in 1990 I then moved on to work for Murrays Coaches at the age of 17 (the youngest driver ever by this company).

After 5 years I created my own bus and coach company and with 12 months was operating a fleet of 24 coaches from 12 seaters up to 61 seater double deck Setras. This being a hard task for me but I did enjoy it, In May 1997 I was picking up a brand new $400,000.00 coach and was the pride of my fleet and at the age of 23 to be buying one was just a great feeling. In 2000 my son was born and I had made my mind to sell the business and look after him, also in the years heading towards 2000 I bought and was running 9 trucks.

So in my short life have enjoyed most of it and look forward to the rest, I began riding bikes when I was 9 and have family on the land around Australia with plenty of room to ride and enjoy ourselves. In the last few years have been riding small bike as no time to do anything as I am doing now. In the start of 2005 I made up my mind to buy a GL1200 Aspencade (my pride and joy), after the Xmas ride with the club I started looking at buying a new GL1800. So on the Monday 5th Jan 06 the new Blue Gl1800 (Blue Thunder) arrived just in time to ride to the club meeting in Brisbane, the old GL1200 is now in Bundy with a side car attached to her.

I got married in Oct 1994 to my  Japanese wife and in 2000 our son Kyle arrived, since then I have backed off from too much hard work but do enjoy my time with the club and hope to enjoy many good trips with my GL1800 (Blue Thunder).

Today I operate a mini coach on the Gold Coast and a few school buses in Beenleigh and Brisbane, this taking all the time I have during the week so the weekend is spare for me and Blue Thunder.

Any one ever needing a bus or coach please look at my web site www.hireabus.com.au
